718928 2008-11-08 18:43:00 I am thinking of a used laptop with Wifi since it can be so cheap or just use my even older laptop and live without Wifi. I mean I could add Wifi now but it just means is a $80 investment better or is a $300 newer used laptop better.

Just want to get an idea of how much importance of Wifi mobility for users.

Cheers :)

What's the current laptop spec?

718932 2008-11-08 23:58:00 Current: P3 600Mhz, 320MB max. Without Wifi but can do PCMCIA. Cannot do USB since it's 1.1.

Possible: P4 M 1.7Ghz, 1GB upgradeable to 2GB Max, $400. Wifi builtin.

While I am getting a desktop PC self built. I thought is the current laptop ok going to clubs and going on travel as a photo's backup device and where possible use the free wifi for web and email. Ie., $80 PCMCIA card vs a $400 laptop.

It's they are both the thin laptops - one inch thick, 12" screens, no floppyu or optical drives. Both laptops has the base unit or docking station. My current one I have, the possible purchase one the $400 price includes it with a optical drive installed.

718933 2008-11-09 00:32:00 I would go for wired networking if you can. Safer, faster and cheaper. jwil1 (65)
718934 2008-11-09 01:10:00 Not saying its the best option as the laptop is quite old but you can get pcmcia cards cheaper then $80, example here (www.qmb.co.nz) and here (www.pbtech.co.nz). stormdragon (6013)
718935 2008-11-09 01:51:00 Home and Uni or at a friends house. Data plans are too damn expensive in NZ :( beeswax34 (63)
718936 2008-11-09 07:00:00 I use wifi all the time at home, university and work. However, I very rarely use public wifi hotspots. maccrazy (6741)
718937 2008-11-09 07:11:00 I use wifi at home and when I go stay with my daughter in the US. Always take my Macbook with me to New Plymouth to see family. One day I'll get lucky and someone there will have a wireless router with broadband! lakewoodlady (103)
