718229 2008-11-06 18:46:00 After I admired my glorious physique :banana in the mirror during morning ablutions, SWMBO decided on the spot that I'm too fat and that my gut is a bit on the biggish side. She also decided that I will cut out coffee and bread - both of which I'm quite fond of . B*gger me, what's left - I don't consume alcohol, fatty foods, etc. so I just wonder what will be next - "you can't look at the half dressed young females any more, you should avert your eyes". :crying

She also decided that I'm in need of a total medical checkup - for her sake. I have no problems on the medical side (touch wood) so b*gger me again, what should one do?

A question to the elderly gentlemen on this forum - how long does these phases last with the female of the species (because I haven't seen it before)?

LOL

718230 2008-11-06 19:56:00 I have a weight problem too. You can't lose weight by just eating the right foods, you have also got too exercise. I walk approx. 7kms 4 or 5 days a week just to help keep my weight down.

When did you last have a medical. If you haven't had one in the last year I suggest you do. For all you know you could have one of the silent killers, eg, high blood pressure or postrate cancer.

I go to the doctor every 3 months to renew my medication that I'm and one is for high blood pressure and I also have a bllod test for postrate cancer one a year.
I agree with your wife.

718231 2008-11-06 20:16:00 Hi Sarel. Be ever so grateful that she cares. If you have not had a major health scare then just wait to see her reaction after you do. The screws will really go on. I think it is an instinctive/genetic thing with the ladies, wanting to preserve their partners. My good lady was always careful about the diet but after I had a triple by-pass more than five years ago the healthy food regime and almost daily exercise routines really kicked in. You'll get to appreciate it. Scouse (83)
718232 2008-11-06 20:34:00 I hope all you guys have more than just the PSA blood test for prostate cancer . It is no more than an indicator test, and a cancer can be well advanced, and have left the prostate gland, by the time a raised PSA is detected . There is no substitute for the annual digital test .

Your doctor can detect any nodule growth or change of texture in the prostate surface . The minor discomfort and embarrassment is worth it for the peace of mind gained . And don't forget that your GP does hundreds of these tests, so you are no different from the patients he sees all day, very day . :):)

718233 2008-11-06 20:43:00 Hi Sarel. It is good to have a regular medical checkup (total medical checkup for the first time, followed by regular minor checkups), as the onset of some medical diseases tend to increase their probability for men at your age (pardon the bluntness). Some of the medical tests can be done at home (e.g. high blood pressure testing).

As mentioned by the above posts, exercise plays an important role in maintaining health.

With regards to the aspect of diet, abstaining from coffee and bread sounds a little bit extreme. Perhaps SWMBO can decrease the size of your daily meals instead?

Cheers :)

Did she? Are you? Or is she exaggerating?
And how does no coffee have anything to do with it?

718235 2008-11-06 21:01:00 Coffee is a known mild diuretic (a compound that increases urinary rate), thus coffee intake causes a decrease in blood volume, which is beneficial for high blood pressure patients.

Cheers :)

If you are a fan of cafe coffee then you could be consuming very large amounts of calories depending on the type and quantity you drink . A lot of cafe coffee is made with full cream milk rather than water topped up with milk and if you add a spoon or two of sugar as well then it almost becomes as bad as eating a McDonalds hamburger .

Non-white bread is healthy but you have to watch what you pile on top of it . Thick toppings of butter/marg, jam, peanut butter, etc soon send the calories skyhigh .

The biggest cause of expanding waistlines is increased portion sizes . People can eat the healthiest food in the world but if they eat too much of it for the amount of energy they expend then it just goes straight to the waistline and hips . :(

Glad to hear its not the beer expanding the waistline, i'd be in trouble otherwise . . . . hehe .
