832861 2009-11-23 22:04:00 Hi Everyone,

Sometimes, when I start up my computer, it takes AGES to log on, and then only 4 icons load up, even though in task manager the process names are still there. Other times all the icons appear instantly. However, a few PCs ago, I had the same problem. Both the computers were running xp sp3. Can anyone help me? :help:

As a start you might want to post the specs of the computer and also get Hijackthis and post the report.

I assume it does not happen all the time.

832863 2009-11-24 02:43:00 Hi,

I am running windows xp sp3. Sometimes when I turn the computer on, the system tray is empty apart from the clock. Then, one by one, only 4 icons appear (Avast, Zonealarm, Sound and no network). However, when I check in task manager, all the system tray applications (unlocker and so on) are still there, as if the system tray is "hiding" them.

Disable Universal Plug and Play

One piece of advice we've frequently seen offered to people suffering from this problem is to disable the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play Device Host. To do this, open Administrative Tools in Control Panel, and then open Services. Select "SSDP Discovery Service", right-click it and select Properties. Change the startup type to "Disabled" and then click OK. Repeat this for the "Universal Plug and Play Device Host."
