719582 2008-11-12 21:00:00 yeah when done right they are apparently so brilliant its painfull :wub

its the perfect theory - supercharger for low RPM boost - then cutting to the large turbocharger at high rpm for when the supercharger loses effectivness

just needs to be done properly

I've seen pictures of a supercharged twin turbo wrx.

Now thats insane. Useless and would probably blow up every 5000 km, but insane. :D

Yes, if done right a supercharger and turbo (a massive turbo) would provide some awesome power, especially off the line.

719583 2008-11-12 21:17:00 Those are some complicated looking guts... Thebananamonkey (7741)
719584 2008-11-12 21:27:00 Yeah ae.

A normal subie is bad enough to work on. Imagine trying work on that!!! :stare:

$15,000 to change the cam belt ftw. :(

Um...? What?

Do you have to take the whole engine out first?

Or is it made of iridium or something?

719586 2008-11-12 21:48:00  No no... I was just joking at the labour cost, most of it would have to come off to do anything to the engine. wratterus (105)
719587 2008-11-12 21:57:00 boxer's in scoobies are notorious for higher than normal labour costs - maily due to the engine layout (its basically a V4\V6 thats been stomped on a bit) so its got 2 head gaskets - both should be replaced if one goes for fear the other one could fail too - cambelt(s) are more complicated and harder to work on and get to

also a friend of mine was baffled at how hard it was to even just change the oil and sparkplugs compared to a "normal" engine

but if you know what you are doing and like a challenge - go for it :clap

Dead right. :D

Uneconomical, unreliable, hard to work on, yet, somehow, everyone loves them. :p

They look and sound awesome. That's probably a large part of it.

Replace them with a 1.6l diesel and put a subwoofer in the exhaust I reckon. Same effect, problems solved? lol

719590 2008-11-12 22:15:00 I had a 1974 1400 sube boxer (Same type the Swedish tourists had when murdered in Coromandel) it was ok to work on. It used to smoke use oil, did the rings, started smoking again.
The latest ones seem to be be grenades if they are given death.
