719382 2008-11-11 20:25:00 I agree with the good points made above by Terry and pctek.

Solmeister is also ignoring the tourist income from overseas punters using the St James Walkway (which is an extremely popular track) and the fact that DoC will get concession payments from tourist operators. The former income stream goes into the NZ economy and the latter subsidises the taxpayer costs in running DoC. {Just noticed the whinge from Whanganui - hut fees are also paid to DoC in addition to the concessions etc. And if you accept the Whanganui whinge at its face value, you would then sell off all recreational/conservation land in govt ownership - whoopee! no more National Parks.}

Oh, and there will be no increase in the numbers of people getting lost there simply because the govt now owns the land!

719383 2008-11-11 20:31:00 Listen mate, if we didn't pay such high taxes, and had money to burn....why not?. But, we dont......!

That's all....I think its a waste of (our) money...

719384 2008-11-11 20:34:00 I miss the good old days, when the government would just confiscate the land, and then shoot anyone who complained. Metla (12)
719385 2008-11-11 20:43:00 None of you are getting it, although Metla is close.

Not anyone who complained, just everyone.

That way we know they mean business. Crime and insolence would stop overnight.

719386 2008-11-11 21:37:00 'You' can't put a monetary value on New Zealands Heritage, or perhaps we should sell off Mount Cook and surrounding National Park to Bill Gates or the Chinese ????

After all Mount Cook doesn't earn us any money directly, in fact we are always forking out on Search and Rescue :)

Labour didn't actually pay out $40 million in the way implied emotively by Solmiester, the money came mostly from the Nature Heritage Fund which is a contestable fund administered by DOC. It was set up in 1990, and has operated under both National and Labour governments, and has purchased many properties in that timeunder both governments to add to NZs heritage.

Only 13% of the station was used for cattle grazing, mainly along the valley floor, the area is not "rock and dirt" as Metla says :) it is of varied nature, with bush up to the snow line.

719387 2008-11-11 21:44:00 Surely we could get billions for Mt Cook?, how many cows could it sustain?, Perhaps we should approach Fonterra? Metla (12)

It wouldn't have worked - they only shot Maori when they wanted to seize their land, and Maori didn't own this bit.

719389 2008-11-11 21:52:00 Pretty sure the theory is they owned all of the country, hell, even the fish in the sea. Metla (12)
