2008-11-09 05:52:00 | Will do. I have just found that a three week holiday (including two weeks on a friend's yacht in the Whitsunday Is!) is better than any drugs! :) | John H (8) | |
2008-11-09 06:32:00 | Hi pctec. Re: In fact my mum who has had arthritis for about 35 years still does the same thing. She used to take all sorts of stuff but went back to over the counter pain management only. During a consultation with a heart-surgeon after a triple by-pass over five years ago, he gave me his friendly "opinion" that non of the unctions widely advertised would or could cure or even help the arthritic joint problems I had had for some years. In his opinion it was mind over matter when you had paid $90 for a couple of jars of pills and expected results. He prescribed a daily dose of a mild pain killer which I still get on regular prescrption and I walk and bike ride almost daily. Did the Otago Rail Trail earlier this year and last year. Wouldn't have tried that on Glucosamine.

2008-11-11 17:58:00 | pctek - I did have that cynical reaction too . However I heard later from other sources that you are supposed to take them together . I'm not a conspiracy theorist normally, but maybe the health shops are in this together! I have stopped taking both . The cost is outrageous anyway for something that is not proven effective . My ortho tells me that in digestion any of these "cures" are reduced to proteins in the alimentary system and of no use at all . In fact, quite the opposite as I have seen in a few of my friends who are gaining on me by years . The biggest problem is that people apply these poultices and balms and consume these compounds denying real medical advice and after a while it's too late for real medical intervention . I have a friend who now cannot risk repair of both knees as she waited too long, all the while eating vast quantities of Glucosamine kinase and other arthritic "cures" from unlicensed and uncontrolled sources of things herbal . I recommend that anyone wanting to follow in her footsteps, avoid all the quackery and just wander through the woods, nibbling and noshing on bark and twigs that they find on their pathway . It's cheaper and the results will be the same . Actually, there are so many Glucosamine-based derivatives that you might not be getting what you think you are anyway . I offer: N-Acetylglucosamine, Glucosamine N-acetyltransferase, Glucosamine-phosphate N-acetyltransferase, Glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase, UDP-glucosamine 4-epimerase, (heparan sulfate)-glucosamine 3-sulfotransferase 1, (heparan sulfate)-glucosamine N-sulfotransferase, GlmS glucosamine-6-phosphate activated ribozyme, (heparan sulfate)-glucosamine 3-sulfotransferase 3, (heparan sulfate)-glucosamine 3-sulfotransferase 2, Chondroitin sulfate, Phosphoacetylglucosamine mutase, Glucuronosyl-disulfoglucosamine glucuronidase, N-acetylglucosamine kinase ad nauseum . Actually any "compound" may call itself "Glucosamine-" or so based if it has any one or more of the aforementioned chemicals or compounds inside the container . Which one are YOU taking? :waughh: Go to a real doctor and find out what the options are then decide if swinging a black cat over your head at midnight on the crossroad in a cemetery is what you really want to do . Just get informed first . For reference I personally have: 1) Osteoporosis T-score = -3 . 10 2) Osteopenia 3) scoliosis 4) arthritis (L + C) 5) osteoarthritis 6) spinal stenosis 7) peripheral neuropathy 8) bilateral sciatica 9) compressive spinal fracture(s), lumbar and cervical I have good medical interventions with good pharmaceuticals and stay totally away from snake oils and witchery . I know what I am doing is the best and would not have it any other way; I also know there is no cure for my situation but rather modulation and control of pain and mobility . One or two things that I use, which are herbal in source are lavender oil and tea tree oil . They both provide topical relief and I even like the smell, but they are NOT curatives or anything more than pleasantly warming . Having done mucho research and reading on this subject and firmly eschewing anything but real medical assistance I know what fakery exists in the fears and unknown about these bone conditions to the general uninformed public . Rheumatoid arthritis is the most undignified condition of all as it's so disfiguring and my heart goes out to all who have it .

2008-11-11 20:19:00 | There is a recent article in the NZ Listener (15 Nov) that summarises 2005 and research on Glucosamine related to osteoarthritis . The article says that the research suggested that Glucosamine sulphate is an effective therapy but glucosamine hydrochloride is not . However, going to the end of the article, it suggests that there is no proof that glucosamine in itself is the effective agent - it is possible that glucosamine sulfate only appears to be an effective therapy because it raises the sulphate levels in the blood - in other words, glucosamine may be a waste of space, and that sulphate may be the key .

Minced meat, fresh chorizo (highly-seasoned pork sausage) and raw sausages were more in line with legislation . Jack-In-The Box or Booger King anyone? :wub |

2008-11-12 01:39:00 | On the topic of quackery... The whole alternative medicine shebang works because doctors say 'sorry but I can't help you there', or similar. If you go to two people, and one of them says no, and the other one says yes, and you're in pain, who are ya gonna beleive? Apparantly, omega 3 isn't only good for joints. In the UK, it's also good for kids' brains. (www.badscience.net) [/hijack] Anyway, my sympathies, etc.
