| 718250 | 2008-11-07 00:24:00 | Humour your darling a little, have a medical check-up. Hmmm and insist she has one, too! Psssst....ask your doctor whether a few cups of coffees a day is harmful. I'd be careful about mentioning the 4 cups before 8 though, if he says cut back, then there are larger cups. :banana Husband is a lover of bread, too and I have a feeling that if I didn't cook meals then he'd opt for bread type food a bit too often!! Probably more out of not wanting to cook, than not actually wanting a cooked meal. |

| 718252 | 2008-11-07 00:46:00 | I'm 49, no family history of high BP, no family history of high cholestrol, no family history of diabetes, and a non-smoker (never smoked - but had done a lot of pub work in my youth) . Around 2000, we had changed or diets to more healthy stuff . I had a triple bypass in 2004 after an asymptomatic and atypical heart attack . Arteries were found to be 100%/85%/100% blocked - a dead man walking . OK, I was a little overweight - about 10kg - and had relatively recently given up any serious form of exercise (2002) . . . I now check the labels on the back of food in the supermarket for saturated fat content and cycle at least 120km a week (rode around Port Philip, Melbourne Harbour a couple of weeks ago: 210km in 7 . 5 hours) . And I'm permanently medicated: cartia and statins, every day . Healthy as a horse - now (but still overweight by about 10kg!!) . Lifestyle changes are all well and good, but genes also play a large part . But you certainly don't sound like you're 'at risk', sarel, but it can't hurt to take precautions . . . And like Marine says, there's always larger coffee mugs! :) |

| 718253 | 2008-11-07 00:51:00 | Metla, in my young life I also thought that only crazy b*st*rds run anything further than really neccesary. Then I started running to get fit for squash, I found I liked it and just kept on going. Haven't done much halfs and fulls locally yet but I've done some serious mileage in my time. The worst ever was that Ultra Marathon in Arizona (can't remember the name - Joe?), after three yards you are dying from the heat/exhaustion/dehydration/take your pick. After a mile the sand devils get hold of you and after two miles you think you're on some psychodelic drugs. After that the sun comes up and the sh*te really starts. Marnie, it's not as if I've got a choice so I have to, whether I want to or not. SWMBO has to see the Doc quite regularly - high BP, and terrible problems with her joints. When I was a young, poor student I remember surviving on a loaf of bread a week (no other food and no $$$) - because I had to and because I was stupidly too proud to ask anybody anything. So I do love my bread - toast, sandwiches, whatever. sarel |

| 718254 | 2008-11-07 01:27:00 | This is a bit off the wall, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is osteoporosis in men. With all your load bearing exercise you don't sound like a candidate sarel, but I got a real wakeup when I had my last motorbike accident in 1997 and sustained a shattered wrist. I found out through that process that I had low bone density, and that osteoporosis is not uncommon in men. Women get all the publicity about it because their bone density loss is a steep decline during menopause, whereas men can have a slow decline over the years. Anyway, I have osteopenia - one stage before osteoporosis - and I have to take lots of calcium rich foods, calcium supplements, and calciferol once a month. If you have had a fracture that probably shouldn't have happened, you may want to check out your bone density. And you could tell SWMBO that bread is an essential part of your high calcium regime... |
