833151 2009-11-25 06:47:00 Il vouch for 1156, turbo mode is irrelevant if your gonna oc. Ive had my 860 in windows at 4.5ghz and I'm still not all that sure what im doing.

And I really don't see the big fuss abiout 6 core cpu's, not even that much stuff now uses 4 so how long will it be until 6 are used?

833152 2009-11-25 18:55:00 Yea go for the 1156 i7 860 or i5 750. Much cheaper and performs just as good if not better in benchmarks at stock speeds.

There is no reason to get the more expensive platform, only if you're planning to be SLi/crossfire 3 or more cards. Afaik the X58 platform still doesn't do x16 on all cards in PCIe, which doesn't justiy the cost to go for that route - (16x/16x/8x/8x or 4x), .

P55 does PCIe at (8x/8x/4x/1x). There is little to no difference between the bus speed of 8x and 16x, so 1 or 2 card go for the 1156.

lol 1156 I7 its NOT a lot cheaper anymore lol, hrrrrrr Sure stock speeds is slightly faster primarily due to the MHz diff .

If you ever plan or think its possible you may go SLI or CF down the track the choice to go 1156 is a questionable one, its very reasonable to assume future cards will require more bandwidth, how much more? well that's another risk with 1156 none of us can answer .

Meh, you talk as if SLI\CF is a real requirement....truth of the matter is PCIe 1.0 isnt yet saturated and even a 5870 is enough for 2560x1600 these days....and the difference between 8x8 and 16x16 is maybe 1-3% at that resolution....the only thing you have right in the difference between the platform is reducing depending on the level of motherboard you are buying...

833155 2009-11-26 02:41:00 If you're getting a P55 platform based on an i7 860 the savings you make won't be much - probably around $200 or lower. I reckon $200 is a worthwhile premium for another 2GB of triple channel RAM, the benefits (no matter how little it is to you) of an X58 chipset and the sheer sexiness of an 920/X58 system. :p qazwsxokmijn (102)
833156 2009-11-26 03:21:00 Great thread, Good info, even the disagreement on the best items sheds plenty of light on the hardware and its capabilities. Metla (12)

Rather put the difference to a SSD myself, thats even sexier!

833159 2009-11-26 21:42:00 Have to say I'm jealous of your SSD BT2.....are you running TRIM?...Anand La Shimpi said he would never go back the SATA as an O/S platform! SolMiester (139)
833160 2009-11-26 21:52:00 Yea I am, Id have to say going back to Sata for the OS would be a little painful, I notice the drive lag on work machines, but you know its sure costly still. Battleneter2 (9361)
