719148 2008-11-10 19:02:00 I agree. It is definitely a petulant response. We all know very few poli's survive an election defeat, but it looks like when the going got tough the top 2 just up and resigned. Where is the sense of responsibility to the party, to help them through what is going to be a tough time? Talk about taking the easy option. Good riddance to both of them (esp. cullen).

Absolutely Andrew.

Imagine if the All Black Captain and Vice Captain spat the dummy and resigned every time they lost a Test. :illogical

I think they expected the rest of the Party to drop to their knees and beg them to stay.

It didn’t happen, but we can take comfort from the fact they are being attended by dozens of "Grief Counsellors". :D

Bad example there B.M. You'd have to use the Coaches and selectors, the team members didn't get the choice of staying.

719150 2008-11-10 19:39:00 If they hadn't left the top jobs then the caucus would have been sharpening the knives to remove them.
Agreed but there are ways and means. What is wrong with adding three words to the resignation speech, such as "effective December 1st" or some other such date? But instead we got a petulant response of throwing the toys out of the cot. As for cullen, knowing his leader has resigned, he could have done the same thing saying he would take over until a new leader had been appointed with a target date of x. They have shown their true colours and in particular, their lack of spine.

every PM that has lost an election has been removed by their caucus very shortly after losing an election.
Uh, isn't that almost what I said ("very few")?

As for Cullen, he was always clear that he had no interest in leading the party in the House.
In which case he should never have been deputy leader. Had Helen been misfortunate enough to die while in office would cullen have resigned??? The talent within labour (Phil Goff (post from 2005) (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) excepted) is as shallow as a bird bath.

Get a grip! If the NZ PM dies there's plenty of time to make any rearrangements . It's not as if they have to have a plan for who gets the keys to the nuclear weapons

Rubbish, they may not have had a choice of staying, but like I said, they have a choice of going.

In any other business or organisation there would have been a debriefing and if a major player felt responsible they would offer their resignation. This would be accepted or declined.

Only Control Freaks throw their toys upon hearing they no longer have control.

Good riddance anyway. :D

719153 2008-11-10 21:16:00 The important thing is they have gone -

Let us be thankful for that.

719155 2008-11-10 21:31:00 the NZ PM dies Really? How do you know that?? Where did you get that from? And who said anything about nuclear weapons? In case you haven't heard, we don't have any...... Before you reply, consider what I am trying to illustrate in that taking parts of peoples quotes out of context is a bollicks way of having a discussion/debate/whatever....so if you want to talk about cullen not taking over the reigns etc. then I'm more than happy to discuss the point in the context it was made. Otherwise it is a WOFTAM.

On a lighter note, was this you Paul?

What are you on about?

I only mentioned nuclear as unlike NZ the US President is in the military chain of command and the VP takes over if the President is out of action . In NZ AFAIK nobody automatically takes over as PM without their Party's approval . Norm Kirk was the last to die and his deputy didn't replace him . John Key is proof that you don't need training to be PM .

FWIW I'm not as upset by the changes in Government as the nuttier supporters on the right will be when they don't get the changes they want .
