718625 2008-11-08 08:26:00 pctec, saw one recently. Beautiful carved bone handle. Twist the handle 1/8 turn and out comes 65cm of cold steel. It would be a neat surprise for one of these street mongrels, as long as you got in first. BobM (1138)

718627 2008-11-08 23:06:00 My commiserations, I have lived with arthritis in both knees and my left ankle due to sports injuries and a bad parachute landing when I was in in my twenties, those happy days when one believed one was bomb proof.

Get onto a regime of Glucosamine it definitely helps and get Celebrex for the bad days which hopefully won't be too many. You shouldn't overdo the Celebrex.

Ken, do you take any fish oils etc with your glucosamine? The local health shop fella said there is no point in taking glucosamine without Omega3 fish oil capsules (he reckoned the glucosamine repaired the lining of your joints, and the oil was to lubricate them.. sounded weird, I know). Anyway, I took both, and found that my system didn't cope with the oil and I had to stop. No details, but let us say that at all times of the day I was incredibly anti social...)

Hey John. I would suggest you pop by to your local chemist and have a chat with the pharmacist about that. Glucosamine - yes, it is involved in the production of cartilage tissue in the body. Based on my research, Omega 3 is involved in "hypolipidaemic action (especially a reduction in plasma triglycerides), an anti-inflammatory action, and an antiplatelet effect". I can't confirm or deny the claims made by the person in the local health shop (Harvey's, by any chance?)

And yes, Celebrex should not be ingested in large quantity.

Cheers :)

718630 2008-11-09 03:32:00 Thanks Jamuz. I think it would be a good idea, and to discuss it with my quack as well, because I have to have regular liver function tests cos of some skin medication I am on, and after taking the glucosamine/Omega3 for a coupla months, I had my first mildly abnormal liver function test. Maybe a coincidence, but ... And no, it wasn't Harveys. Not sure of the make - it is the one in Merivale Mall in ChaCha. John H (8)

Not to be cynical or anything but I bet he did. $$$

Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. Glucosamine forms chitin, which composes the exoskeletons of crustaceans and other arthropods, cell walls in fungi and many higher organisms.

Exoskeleton here I come.LOL.

Its use as a therapy for osteoarthritis appears safe, but there is conflicting evidence as to its effectiveness.

I'm not into taking anything unless I really have to.

Its only a new condition and a mild over the counter painkiller in the morning does the trick. In fact my mum who has had arthritis for about 35 years still does the same thing. She used to take all sorts of stuff but went back to over the counter pain management only.

I am well aware there is no cure. There's maintenance only.

We all disintegrate eventually.

Meanwhile I'll play with my new weapon, uh, walking aid.

Want a bit of fencing practice? Mine versus your bone handle one.....:)

718633 2008-11-09 03:48:00 pctek - I did have that cynical reaction too. However I heard later from other sources that you are supposed to take them together. I'm not a conspiracy theorist normally, but maybe the health shops are in this together!

I have stopped taking both. The cost is outrageous anyway for something that is not proven effective.

718634 2008-11-09 05:32:00 Hi John. It's better to check out the facts with credible persons than to rely on hearsay! :)

Talk to your physician about getting a subsidised treatment if you must.

Cheers :)
