719562 2008-11-11 14:24:00 Hi,
I just bought a subaru Legacy, and i ws wondering is there much that can be done about the turbo lag, its a 2.0ltr twin turbo model. The car is the most comfortable car i've ever driven but too get over the lag would make it perfect. Cost is a issue so if you know the cheaper the better. If anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you
John

yeah you might need to download and install the turbo lag bugfix, turbolag.exe its a known issue but that should fix it.

as for lag its inherent to all turbocharged engines - what i want to know is it all factory? ie factory turbos and intercooler setup?

if it has had the top mount underbonnet intercooler removed in favour of a front mount intercooler then the increased size and more complicated piping all contributes to extra lag for a small power gain (if any really)

but if everything is stock standard there may not be much that can be done to reduce lag - apart from checking all the various pipes for cracks that could cause problems - ive also heard fitting an aftermarket "pod" air filter can help reduce lag as everything can breathe better - so less lag possibly and more power - same goes for the exhaust system - a better flowing exhaust could help with reducing lag and increasing power too

i dont know too much about this sorta thing as ive never owned a turbocharged car but this is just stuff off the top of my head

or you could make it non-road legal and install an anti-lag system for Sh*ts and giggles :clap

719567 2008-11-11 20:31:00 Those twin turboed subies are terrible for lag, as mac_h8er said, is it all factory? Installing a front mount intercooler doesn't really achieve achieve anything if the car has a top mount intercooler/bonnet scoop, and you're not doing it up or anything.

Make sure theres no leaks.

You could put in a new ECU, set up antilag, extremely expensive. And you'd root the engine in about 3 months.

Best thing is to learn to shift down quickly. :)

719568 2008-11-11 21:18:00 could be worse - you could have a Version 1 o 2 WRX STi - those were absolute pigs for horrible amounts of turbo lag as far as ive been told - hence all the boy racers are always driving round at 4,000RPM to avoid it :waughh: MAC_H8ER (5897)
719569 2008-11-11 21:37:00 I'm no expert, but aside from what everyone else has posted, your only other option is a new turbo, one with much lighter blades.

Anyway, why are you worrying about turbo lag? I don't see many Legacy B4's on the track...

719570 2008-11-11 21:39:00 The twin turbo suby's run a primary/secondary turbo
This is designed to give more tourqe through the entire rev range and smoothness of acceleration.
Primary driverside starts off at low rev range at a low boost then secondary on higher rev range at a higher boost.
I think you'll find it is boosting down low just not as much as you want.
The Sti GC/GD create alot more launching feel in a specific rev range because of larger single turbo, but like people say it comes on later because of the size of the wheels.

Suggestion check the intake manifold for any sign of oil, one of the first signs of turbo wear.

Theres a good reason for that. :D
