720205 2008-11-14 07:31:00 Hi
Appears have blown a HID bulb on subaru impreza. On base of bulb it has "D2S-35W"

Agents want $200+ for ONE bulb. I feigned interest without purchasing, walked outside and drove home speechless. Not quite comprehending what has just happened I sought solace on trademe and lo and behold they are remarkeably cheaper.

Question: What do the numbers 4300K, 8000K etc actually mean. It appears that they refer to the brightness of the bulb but if that is the case does that mean I can replace what I have with a set 8000K lights with no risk to the lamp housing?

720206 2008-11-14 07:50:00 They represents color temperature, it has nothing to do with brightness, although people think higher K seems brighter because its whiter. SKT174 (1319)
720207 2008-11-14 08:03:00 Hell! Google 'subaru bulb D2S-35W'. Nightlight robbery. BobM (1138)
720208 2008-11-14 08:07:00 That makes sense, thanks.

I was reading a couple of subaru forums and there was mention of issues getting WOF which is another concern. I dont really want to buy upgraded lights but if they fit, legal, affordable and dont affect car then I might as well get them.

720209 2008-11-14 08:09:00 I know mate its blardy robbery must be close to criminal.
Last week I went to John Andrew Ford for rear half of a speedo cable for my Trader.
They said it cost $220 told them instanly to get stuffed, got a second hand one from truck wrecker for $10.
The guy in front of me at John Andrew was an Islander taxi driver he paid $37 for the middle wheel cover insert for his BA Falc. He was like a stunned mullet when they told him the price.
A 3" circular peice of plastic worth around 10cents I guess.
Considering I payed $450 for the Trader I want going to pay half its value for half a speedo cable.
Dont worry about WOF they probaly wont notice if one brighter than the other.

My concern is the price difference. Some lights are advertised at $2-300 each yet trademe have a pair for less than $70. My 'scam' radar is telling me that if it sounds too good to be true.....

720211 2008-11-14 08:26:00 I wouldnt panic mechanic you arent on the Titanic. The $70 lights will be after market made in Taiwan or Mainland China/ Vietnam/Thailand etc probaly cost bugger all to make.
A pair of brake shoes and wheel cylinders for my Trader is $75.00 they cost $250 a pair 20 years ago. Sure they are made in Taiwan instead of Japan but who cares they stop the Trader sweet.

720212 2008-11-14 08:30:00 I had to get a new remote for my corolla. $60 I could live with. Then was told there would be a $30 programming fee. When i asked if there programming was ant different to the well laid out instructions that are included in the user manual supplied with car, there jaws dropped. It took me all of 5 minutes to do it, and that was including reading the instructions half a dozen times. plod (107)

Are they the same?

I just got a transmission overhaul kit for a buddy in Canada. My cost including shipping was $175.00, and if he bought it in Canada, they wanted $3,000.00 Canadian.

What a hosing!
