I understand that in Ireland, Bill is not generally used as an alternative to William. For Irish Catholics, the alternative is Liam. Proddies apparently use Bill.

I understand that this goes back to the Dutch/English prat King William (of Orange) and the Battle of the Boyne - his armies slaughtered the Irish, and as he was commonly referred to as King Billy, Catholic Irish would not use the name William or Bill.

At least that is what I was told by someone of Irish Catholic descent, who had a son called Liam.
