834465 2009-11-28 19:09:00 A friend has a laptop with a C: of 30gb. It tells me it has 500mb free, however I can only find 21gb of files on the drive (even after showing hidden and system files etc.)

Any ideas where the extra space might have gone?

Thanks,
Mike.

834467 2009-11-28 19:49:00 Do they have System Restore enabled?
If so it could explain at least some of this.
check out this link it shows how to reclaim that space.

834468 2009-11-28 19:49:00 There could be a hidden restore partition. Sweep (90)

I thought of that, but system restore is only allocated 3gb I think, and that should have shown up when I look at total usage anyway I thought... Imight try turning it off and seeing if that makes any difference.

834470 2009-11-28 19:54:00 There could be a hidden restore partition. It does, but that wouldn't make any difference. Windows reports C: as being 30gb in size, so a hidden partition wouldn't be counted in that anyway.

Cheers,
Mike.

834471 2009-11-28 20:51:00 Could be hibernation if its enabled. It'll be the same size (as the amount of ram installed) if its enabled. Use something like ccleaner, see how much it removes. What version of windows is on it? Speedy Gonzales (78)

What version of windows is on it?But if I show all files (system & hidden), and select all files/folders from C: and go properties, that should show up shouldn't it? When I do this I'm told there's 21gb of files/folders selected, however there's only 500mb free space

834473 2009-11-28 23:15:00 Well use ccleaner, see how much it removes. How OLD is the laptop? And whats it formatted in? Speedy Gonzales (78)
