720523 2008-11-16 18:53:00 SurferJoe, if you still have power, can you see any of the Wildfires from your place?? stu161204 (123)
720524 2008-11-17 02:04:00 Since the fires are almost an annual event I am surprised they get insurance anymore living there. The hills around Sydney, Australia get it also and some have insurance issues, some have built in sprinkler systems around the property and on the roof to help protect to some extent. Bantu (52)
720525 2008-11-17 02:13:00 Surely the star's $10 million+ estates would have some form of insurance. wratterus (105)

We haven't actually had black-outs, but I have seen surges and a few moments of "brown-outs" where the power drops to a very low rate .

The fires aren't in my neighborhood this time, but up around the areas where the old Bel-Air and Malibu fires were in the 1970s . I don't expect too many more fires to "break-out" right now, although merging of existing ones is for sure . There isn't even a wisp of smoke in the air around here .

Two years ago we had firebrands landing on our roofs and lawns from the Banning-Beaumont fires, which were arson by a mentally diminished person .

The Brea-Olinda fire as it's now known, is basically still out of control, but we expect better fire control tomorrow (Monday here) as the Santana (Devil) Winds are dying and we resume the on-shore flow from the Pacific Ocean to dampen and lower the temps of the air .

Some c/p follows:

The Triangle Complex Fire and the Brea Fire have merged and are now burning as one fire between Corona and Brea, south of Diamond Bar .

The biggest threat is in the Tonner Canyon area where dozens of homes are threatened across ridgelines in The Country, as it is know to locals, south of Diamond Bar . Crews are fighting off advancing flames moving north into Los Angeles County .

KCAL/9 TV is reporting that evacuations have begun in Diamond Bar . The fire remains south of Diamond Bar city limits but has burned into Tonner Canyon .

Fire has already swept through Telegraph Canyon and is near cresting ridgelines on Highway 57 . LA County authorities are joining the fight now with Orange County to control the blaze . Only 5 percent of the fire has been contained . It has burned at least 10,500 acres .

A merging fire can be a benefit and at the same time dangerous, fire officials say .

Firefighters say the fires could burn over each other and already charred fuel . However, as winds continue to shift, propelling the fire northwest, firefighters now have a new front to battle .

"It may help us, could slow down the burn, but once the wind shifts, it means we have more open line we have to worry about," said Riverside County fire Captain Julie Hutchinson .

The "Sun-Downer" winds aren't causing as much dispersion of the flames as was expected and the firefighters are happy over the newest events .

Here's another local newspaper c/p:

Firefighters were heavily engaged with fires in Telegraph Canyon and Tonner Canyon, south of Diamond Bar, early this afternoon as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger met with officials at the Triangle Complex Fire command post in Irvine .

An arsenal of helicopters and air tankers are bombarding flames encroaching on homes in Diamond Bar .

Assistant Fire Chief Ray Chaney said the goal is to not let the fire jump into Diamond Bar communities . Firefighters are preparing to order residents to evacuate if necessary . A Diamond Bar resident told KCAL/9 TV that mandatory evacuation orders had already been issued .

Chaney said flames are advancing in some areas, and firefighters have stopped flames in others near Diamond Bar .

The winds have been the same as everywhere else; strong and gusty . Mother Nature has not been cooperative at all on this fire," he said .

The Triangle Complex Fire had burned 10,475 acres as of 12:10 p . m . Sunday, including 104 residences, the Orange County Fire Authority reported on its Web site .

A structure at Brea High School was burned, as well as 16 homes in Corona, 70 homes in Yorba Linda and 10 homes and 50 apartments in 10 apartment buildings in Anaheim . Six firefighters have suffered minor injuries .

A total of 1,260 firefighters are working on the fire that was reported at 9:01 a . m . Saturday near the Santa Ana River bottom at Highway 91 and Green River Road . The cause is under investigation . The fire authority has not posted an estimate of when it expects to have containment or control .

A red flag weather warning is in effect until 10 p . m . because the dry winds are gusty and erratic .

Evacuations are ordered in parts of Chino Hills, Yorba Linda, Anaheim and Brea .

The governor met with fire officials from Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles counties late this morning to get a briefing on the behavior of the flames and the tactical plan to battle the fire .

Schwarzenegger said the state has all the resources available and needed to attack the blaze .

"We know the winds will come every year and we've repositioned resources to Southern California that amounts to $1 . 9 million a day . We've prepared ourselves . We've assured ourselves of everything we need," Schwarzenegger said .

"I know cities are suffering right now, especially financially . I want to tell them not to worry about financial issues . You always have reserves, and generosity from the federal government to protect life and property . "

Flanked by state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and a dozen fire chiefs, Schwarzenegger said that the state would be there for residents who lost their homes .

"We'll help them rebuild . The key thing to remember is they're not by themselves and we will help them quickly recover . "

Poizner said that families who lost their homes should contact their insurance companies to begin the road to recovery .

He said even families who are being evacuated can be reimbursed while staying in hotel rooms .

Poizner warned fire victims to be aware of scam artists who might try to defraud homeowners out of their insurance money .

He said his agency would work undercover in the coming days to stop such fraudulent activity .

720529 2008-11-18 02:30:00 Sorry for you guys over there Surfer-Joe.

We see it every year fires in California.

You would think that with a country with the resources of the USA that you would be able to
a come up with a solution
b put the fires out quicker - call in the whole gad damm airforce !

And yes they have similar fires every year in Australia.

We get a lot of rain here and it gets depressing when we see such nice places as LA and San Diego in tv, it always looks nice and warm there - not too warm, just nice. But I suppose there must be a downside to everything !

Hope you are OK where you are

720530 2008-11-18 06:52:00 We are out of the fire zones so far. They are more North and West of me here.

Thanks, but we had the really bad ones two years ago when we had firebrands landing on our roof and lawns.
