"If you drop your laptop computer, a chip built in to it will sense the acceleration and protect the delicate moving parts of its hard disk before it hits the ground."
Sounds a bit like wishful thinking to me.......

721468 2008-11-21 08:15:00 I can understand detecting & measuring acceleration, but where does the protection come in?

If I put one of these chips in my pocket and walk out a fourth floor window, will Superman arrive and catch me before I hit the ground?
In view of the fact that they have been called magical, this could be the case.

721469 2008-11-21 09:56:00 I can understand detecting & measuring acceleration, but where does the protection come in?It parks the disk heads before the laptop hits, to avoid damaging the disk surface by taking chunks out of it when the heads make contact. Erayd (23)

721471 2008-11-21 10:26:00 Sudden motion sensors (en.wikipedia.org) have been in Apple notebooks for about 4 years now.
See Smackbook (www.youtube.com), a useless POC.

What happened to your stash? apparently it's been suspended...

No, people who walk off the 4th floor of a building don't deserve to survive. Darwinism :p

721473 2008-11-21 20:25:00 Further query... Would the laptop have to be switched on or powered-up for this chip to work? Perhaps it has constant access to a battery. Scouse (83)
721474 2008-11-21 20:49:00 When you switch off, the heads get safely parked on (almost) every drive by default. R2x1 (4628)

Yes I have been worrying about that,I hope it's on all the time.
