In the appeal government lawyers asked the court to reinstate a fine of $550,000 levied against CBS by the Federal Communications Commission for what the government called “the most widely viewed broadcast public nudity in television history . ” In a statement CBS said it hoped the Supreme Court would “recognize there are rare instances, particularly during live programming, when it may not be possible to block unfortunate fleeting material, despite best efforts . ” |
