835768 2009-12-02 08:30:00 It updates when it wants / needs to. I cant see any option in it to change when it updates, just to scan. By the looks of it, it updates either every day or 2nd day. Or you could use this (www.addictivetips.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)

the same schedule as Windows Update or Automatic Updates on your machine

probably every day at 3AM

else you could visit http://update.microsoft.com yourself to get the latest signatures

or run a command line like

wuauclt /detectnow

you could even run that as a scheduled task several times a day

835770 2009-12-03 22:57:00 I like to make any Windows updates manually so that I can select the ones I want. Problem is that with W7 every time I got to the Microsoft Update page, my Auto Update screen comes up which prevents me from browsing the updates. Auto update is turned off on the Panel, but if Disable it in services, MS Security wont update.

On Auto update it wanted to install 167megs of updates, mostly for items like Office 2007, which I don't have.

My second question is; where are the update files kept after they have been installed? I don't want a Hard drive full of obsolete files.

835771 2009-12-03 23:22:00 The updates usually get extracted. Dont know what folder they go to in Vista or Win7. But I think it was the windowsupdate folder in XP. Everytime you update a patch (and it supercedes a previous patch), it probably overwrites the previous system file. Which is why you reboot, after installing the update. Otherwise, it wont work properly. You dont have to turn the service off, otherwise nothing will update (windows included). Just tell it not to do it automatically. Speedy Gonzales (78)
