2009-11-29 21:58:00 | I would like to purchase new computer system and I would like to get anyones recommendations which system would be best option. Im not sure if I should pick Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66Ghz or Intel Core I7 860 Lynnfield 2.80GHZ Also like to find out which system would be the best option for overclocking. I would appreciate anyones help. These are my 2 Options. Option 1: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66Ghz 8MB 1333Mhz LGA1366 ASUS P6T X58 (Socket LGA1366) Core i7 PCI-E DDR3 Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3-1600 CL8 Prolimatech Megashadow CPU Cooler LGA1366 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 32MB Cache SATAII Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E Corsair HX750 750W Modular Power Supply LG GH-22LS50 22X Lightscribe Black SATA DVD Writer Lian-Li LanCool Dragonlord Case PC-K62B Black Interior with Window Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit OEM Option 2: Intel Core I7 860 Lynnfield 2.80GHZ 8MB LGA1156 EVGA P55 LE INTEL P55 DDR3 PCI-E (132-LF-E653-KR) Corsair CMX8GX3M4A1600C9 4X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9 Prolimatech Megahalems CPU Cooler LGA1366 LGA775 W/ Fan W/Bracket Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 32MB Cache SATAII Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E Corsair HX750 750W Modular Power Supply LG GH-22LS50 22X Lightscribe Black SATA DVD Writer Lian-Li LanCool Dragonlord Case PC-K62B Black Interior with Window Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit OEM

2009-11-29 22:52:00 | oh no more 1366 vs 1156 debates lol !! Core i7 860: -Slighty faster than the 920 due to "better" turbo mode -Slightly Lower power consumption than the 920 due to better power management, -Overall, slightly cheaper than the 920 -Lower heat, can get to slightly higher overclocks without after market cooling. Core i7 920: -Triple channel memory compared to dual channel memory for the 860 (can run dual channel however) -Probably future proof, due to 6 core Gulftown support on the X58 -Easier to overclock because the PCI-e bus is not on the CPU -PCIE 16x16 over 1156 8x8, 1156 "may" top out in future CF or SLI -More mature platform (X58 boards have gone through multiple revisions), no reported socket burn issues. It really depends on how much weight you put on each pro and con personally. I favor 1366, I "may" want to bump up to a 6core in a few years and I have no worry with PCIE bandwidth down the track. Also its worth noting down the track 1156 is very likely to be obsoleted first. There is not much in overclocking as the 920 needs after market cooling first, but the PCI-e bus is on the 860 CPU which is a disadvantage, so the small edge goes to 1366 assuming you were getting aftermarket cooling for either.

2009-11-29 23:48:00 | Thank you for the advice between the 2 Options. If I decide to purchase Intel Core i7 920 is it worth investing in 12GB of memory instead of 6GB? And is there any noticeable difference in speed between 1333 & 1600 Memory? | Annanz (3044) | |
2009-11-29 23:55:00 | Unless you are virtualising many pc's 12Gb is waste of money, hell 6Gb in most cases is over the top...you wont see any diff in memory speeds, however the faster memory will come in handy if clocking to the extreme | SolMiester (139) | |
2009-11-30 00:01:00 | yea +1 on above, not many reasons to go above 6. | Battleneter2 (9361) | |
2009-11-30 00:37:00 | Going with option 1: (Intel Core i7 920) is there anything you would change. Example Motherboard, CPU Cooler, Video Card, Case etc. | Annanz (3044) | |
2009-11-30 00:42:00 | Well, ASUS and Gigabyte have the best reliability, some of the new boards have SATA3 and USB3 (thx BT2), if clocking, the cooler well be important....and for video, you havent stated what size your screen is, however the 5870 is currently the best there is.....so it comes down to vendor warranty and extras.... | SolMiester (139) | |
2009-11-30 01:19:00 | I'd get 12GB and then disable the pagefile.... | Agent_24 (57) | |
2009-11-30 01:34:00 | I'd get 12GB and then disable the pagefile.... Won't work. Windows uses that regardless of physical ram. Just get 12GB anyway. I would if my board would take it.
