835281 2009-12-14 06:05:00 I am surprised Microsoft aren't charging for this.

Is it going to put a dent in other manufacturer's Security software sales?

Dont think so. Other companies are just bitching about it (thats its not as good) because theyre afraid everyone will change to MSE. Because Symantec, trendmicro, AVG, and maybe Bitdefender are expensive, and do bugger all

835282 2009-12-15 01:25:00 I may have discovered a problem.
It seems to hog CPU resources on some computers, I have seen it mentioned on line.
My desk top runs idle at about 2% & the Eee note book sometimes is 45% to 100%, as shown on the Task Manager. This is erratic. It only does it when nothing else is happening. Not really a problem :-)

835283 2009-12-15 02:19:00 It does hog resources, when the malware engine part of it is running. The CPU usage goes to 100%. I noticed that when it was running in the background. It was making the system crawl. So, I decided to go back to XP on the old PC and install Avast. Which doesnt have the same prob Speedy Gonzales (78)
835284 2009-12-15 04:13:00 It does it randomly for me too, horribly annoying while gaming, so I set it only to have access to the 2nd core of my CPU ;)

Never last longer than a minute, maybe two at max, but it bugged me when it *did* happen ....

835285 2009-12-15 04:15:00 You do know it can be set so if the PC is doing something at the time of a scheduled scan it wont do it - it waits till the PC is idle.

That's also why I set the scheduled scans at a time the PC wont normally be used - like having dinner, doing the shopping -- what ever.

835286 2009-12-15 04:53:00 Its not when its scanning, thats the prob. Its MsMpEng, that causes the high CPU usage. I've killed scheduling in MSE. So it cant be the scheduled scanning thats causing it Speedy Gonzales (78)
835287 2009-12-15 05:19:00 Should I choose "Quick Scan" or "Full Scan"?

I have always used Full Scan with AVG, but I suspect I should be OK with Quick Scan. I am now using Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thanks

835288 2009-12-15 05:26:00 Full scan if your not going to be using it at the same time as a full scan is better but a quick scan if you want to use the computer at the same time.

835289 2009-12-15 05:32:00 Sounds right.

AVG was taking about 3 hours to do a full scan uninterupted. I kept pausing it, when I wanted to do something on the computer, so then it took much longer.

835290 2009-12-15 05:47:00 Its MsMpEng, that causes the high CPU usage .

Other than scanning, the only significant spike I've noticed is when it installs new signatures a couple of times a day .

If real-time scanning of files is turned on that also causes some CPU use . I find Process Explorer handy to check this sort of thing because you can get a separate performance graph for any process you want to watch .

By the way for the really keen people, Security Essentials has an ongoing beta here ( . microsoft . com/InvitationUse . aspx?ProgramID=4088&SiteID=981&InvitationID=mse-C642-77W8" target="_blank">connect . microsoft . com)(via Neowin ( . neowin . net/news/main/09/11/30/apply-for-microsofts-security-essentials-ongoing-beta" target="_blank">www . neowin . net)) .

cheers
