835261 2009-12-09 22:22:00 Ho.. and here I was thinking that AVS is the best free anti-virus.
That would be a fact a long time ago.

835262 2009-12-09 23:14:00 My, how times change. A few years ago no one on here would have touched an AV from MS with a barge pole, citing all kinds of conspiracy theories and how MS wants to take over the world, etc etc. Obviously people have forgotten all about the index.dat files saga.

Anyway, I installed the AV on a person's WinXP machine at their request and couldn't disable SpyNet Reporting, even after following the below instructions. Tried all sorts of sly tricks to no avail.

OK have followed the directions right up to "spynetreporting change it to 0"
When I click on OK, I get an error editing value message. "Cannot edit SpyNetReporting: Error writing the value's new contents."

Did you change the permissions?? And change the owner to you?

The machine has gone back to its owner now with SpyNet Reporting still enabled but I will be watching to see if anyone else has this issue.

835263 2009-12-09 23:57:00 The problem I noticed with Spynet in Windows Defender is that you must turn it on to get the advanced protection. Agent_24 (57)
835264 2009-12-10 00:16:00 Dont have any probs here with spynet off. MSE still updates and scans. All the options in MSE are still ticked Speedy Gonzales (78)
835265 2009-12-10 01:40:00 I'm talking about Windows Defender, not Security Essentials... Agent_24 (57)
835266 2009-12-10 01:43:00 Will this MS AV run off a Flash Drive?

835267 2009-12-10 02:35:00 May do, but it'll have to stay plugged in for it to update Speedy Gonzales (78)
835268 2009-12-10 02:36:00 I'm talking about Windows Defender, not Security Essentials...

Whats the diff MSE is just a later version, and both use Spynet

835269 2009-12-10 05:42:00 Windows Defender is not an Antivirus

Security Essentials is the new version of OneCare, but since it does everything Defender does and more, they just decided to replace both with Essentials.

835270 2009-12-12 11:42:00 I am surprised Microsoft aren't charging for this.

Is it going to put a dent in other manufacturer's Security software sales?
