835251 2009-12-04 10:33:00 You dont have to remove everything (except AV programs). Just dont run them all at the same time (in the background). But, I wouldnt get too carried away with too many anti-spyware programs, it'll be overkill. I wouldnt bother with adaware, or spybot. Theyre out of date. Use malwarebytes Speedy Gonzales (78)
835252 2009-12-07 19:59:00 Which would slow down an old laptop the most? This new microsoft one, or avast? I am trying to keep an old nec going a bit longer. supergran (108)
835253 2009-12-07 20:19:00 How old is the laptop?

You could put Linux on it and forget about antivirus..

835254 2009-12-07 20:32:00 Nah, I am pretty sure that the games I have on there wouldn't run on Linux, and I am too old to try and learn a new operating system.

1.5ghz speed I think. about 6 years old, running XP, and it keeps dropping back to 256 ram, so sometimes it has 512 ram and other times 512. LOL

I did say I am trying to keep it limping along. LOL

835255 2009-12-07 20:38:00 Not too bad, but if the RAM keeps changing one of the sticks could be faulty/loose/dirty. Agent_24 (57)
835256 2009-12-07 20:55:00 Yea, it done it when it was still under warranty, and they took the ram out, put it back in and it was fine for another year or so,but now it does it regular, and taking it out and putting it back doesn't seem to work anymore. LOL Only has to last about another 9 months.

But that doesn't answer my question, LOL, what one would use the least resourses. Avast or the new Microsoft one.

835257 2009-12-07 21:21:00 I have no idea. But most people seem to think that Microsoft Security Essentials is better than Avast!, so probably best to try that one first.... Agent_24 (57)
835258 2009-12-09 08:16:00 Ok, just for anyone else trying it, I can't get it to turn on every time I boot the lap top, so put avast back on and it works fine.

So for me, on the computer, looks like avast is it.

835259 2009-12-09 08:24:00 Ok, just for anyone else trying it, I can't get it to turn on every time I boot the lap top, so put avast back on and it works fine .

So for me, on the computer, looks like avast is it . I've seen that a few times, sometimes some PC's / Laptops appear to take a few minutes for it to turn on, it would show up as red, then after a short while go green .

A couple I have had to manually start the service the first time by clicking the red button in the general tab / page .

Another few I have had to remove it, then reinstall it and it works OK --- Dont know why this happens ???
