No worries.

If there is no start after you edit the registry then post back here.

Oh wait. You will need to post on the same computer after installing linux or a computer that has an image backup.

835243 2009-12-01 07:30:00 OK have followed the directions right up to "spynetreporting change it to 0"
When I click on OK, I get an error editing value message. "Cannot edit SpyNetReporting: Error writing the value's new contents."

835244 2009-12-01 07:35:00 Did you change the permissions?? And change the owner to you? Speedy Gonzales (78)
835245 2009-12-01 07:45:00 Is this better than Avast? DeSade (984)

835247 2009-12-01 07:49:00 Goto start/run, type regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\SpyNet. Right mouse on spynet first / permissions, highlight your username / advanced / owner tab. Highlight your username , tick replace owner on subcontainers, and objects. Then tick OK, then OK Then in the right column double click on spynetreporting change it to 0. You'll know its disabled, if you open MSE and go to the settings tab / MS Spynet option. Neither option will be selected

Did you change the permissions?? And change the owner to you?

Ah, that makes a difference.

835248 2009-12-01 08:04:00 Windows automatic updates doesn't have to be on if MSSE is installed, or for MSSE to get updates automatically. Mine is off, and I only install Windows updates manually if I decide to do so. MSSE updates its signature files quietly in the background.

MSSE found a leftover remnant of Comet Cursor from yonks and yonks ago that other antispyware didn't detect.

835249 2009-12-01 08:05:00 I read the privacy statement and it doesn't look like MSSE wants any info that every other AV wants. DeSade (984)
835250 2009-12-04 09:18:00 Going through the instal instructions, it says to remove all other AV and programs like Spybot, adaware, spyware blaster, etc.
Is this a wise move or am I being a little paranoid.
Will it do anything untoward to leave the rest and just remove AVG???
