722661 2008-11-25 08:43:00 I think you'd find the 1.3 ok for the flat lands and downhill, but it would be a pain on the hill climbs, no guts to pass and revving its tiny head off. Fuel economy would be not so good either.

My wife has a 1.3 Mazda Demio 5-speed manual and it goes like a cut cat round town and on the (flat) open road. Even so, two up or loaded it slows very noticeably on hills and I would not like to travel any distance in it.

My pick would be a 1.5/1.6 5-speed manual hatch for versatility, performance, fuel economy and at least some hope in a crash. Do yourself a big favour and test drive some options before you buy.

Cheers

722666 2008-11-26 02:29:00 OK...I waited to see where this was going and I have a couple of comments and maybe a question or so.

You can travel to New York from Huntington Beach on a 50cc moped, and it's been done by a highschool buddy for a lark.

Took him two weeks.
Took several gallons of gasoline.
Took a few rear tires.
Took a bunch of spark plugs and a few cases of 2-cycle oil.
Oh — and he got pneumonia too.

I would have no fear taking one there myself.

What's so hard about driving from one end of an upturned tectonic plate to the other? Half the of trip is down hill anyway.

Maybe you are gonna drive around and around the island for 4 or 5 hours?

A trip of 4 or 5 hours is just a daily commute for most people here and a REAL trip is 6 or 7 days long at freeway speeds uphill and downhill.

I had a 1959 Hillman Husky and drove it 2,500 miles from SoCal to Florida and then back in the 1980s. It was a lark — and an adventure — and cramped like most UK Econo-boxes. But I did it!

Now I would have no fear of driving with my 2.6L Amigo to NY and Back several times over and over. 10KM/Liter too.

I really like the statement though: "Little car for long distance" Lol! Where?

That's precious and hilarious all at the same time. My day has been made much lighter and I am amused.

Perhaps you should consider a Citroen 2CV — small, puny horsepower, lots of smoke, banned in every socially-advanced nation on the Earth as Non-E compliant.

722667 2008-11-26 02:51:00 SJ, I think your post could officially be called "comparing apples with lemons"... If you were talking boats, then fine, because our respective coastlines are similar length. However, talking roads etc I think we are sort of different.

And an American advising Kiwis on what kind of vehicle to drive reminds me of a conference I was at in Adelaide a few years back where there was an American academic strongly advocating that we all needed to introduce Peace Education into our courses... Somehow it felt, well, wrong, for an American to be a missionary to the South Pacific about peace, when we were being screwed by Uncle Sam for daring to keep his nuke ships etc out of our waters.. I felt she would be better advised to do her thing with her fellow citizens...

No offence intended SJ. It is just how my mind works you know. ;)

Couldn't agree with you more — or — less.

It's just me invoking the verbal form of "Yank....." as in: "....your tail".

722669 2008-11-26 06:46:00 The fact is, a1.3 lt car works far to hard on a long trip.
I say min 2ltr .

I would disagree, back in the mid 1970's I did several trips Wellington to Auckland in around 7 hours in a 1100cc Alfasud. I wish to remain silent on the quickest time I did that trip in that car.
