722412 2008-11-24 22:34:00 Therefore the only cure for bloat is to wipe the PC and do a fresh install from scratch.

PCTek I agree with that.
I don't have no where near as much knowledge as you, but I have always known that the way to get back your PC's performance was reformat the harddisk and reinstall everything.

The only thing is when you have about 20 programs and utilities that you use and have customised and got going exactly as you want them, it is quite a major task to do this.

Perhaps we need to start a thread on strategies to do this ?

722413 2008-11-24 23:34:00 I wouldnt disable all services on that Blackviper site.

You can actually make a system unstable and programs wont work. If you disable the wrong service/s

I second that I stumbled upon the black viper site many years ago before it went off and came back on line again and I disabled services as quoted and it gave me endless problems.

Although I do like his site and his work I also wouldn't recommend disabling the services listed.

He does explain what each service is for. Therefore you don't disable something you are going to need.

Making an image helps.

722416 2008-11-25 02:56:00 How many processes do you have running normally? (mine has 24 right at this moment)

Screenshot please? I've got 31 and whilst I might be able to cull a few off if I tried hard enough there's no way I can get down to 24. :illogical

722417 2008-11-25 02:59:00 Usually I find the PC has become full of startup apps.

Oddly enough people complain about macs becoming "slow" too. Often it is a sneaky attempt at getting a better PC.

722418 2008-11-25 03:41:00 Choose the 'Safe' option on Black Viper for excellent performance.

I have used Black Viper's setup on more than 10 computers now, if your computer didn't work properly after you followed his instructions then you did something wrong.

Only XP default services I kill off are Indexing and the security centre, Not a fan of Black viper crap, Benchmarks on a healthy system shows it does bugger all and you never know what won't work further down the line, and going through a bilion services turning them back on one at a time to troubleshoot some crap arse problem aint no fun.

722420 2008-11-25 07:04:00 Whereas I'm a fan of turning off everything I have no need for.
And its not hard to find out what things do or don't do.
