Mr Harvey, who is worth A$1.8 billion in money terms, was asked about the good works he and his business do in the community. He replied that giving money to people who "are not putting anything back into the community" is like "helping a whole heap of no-hopers to survive for no good reason".

WOW, that guy is bang on.....!

Do I feel sorry for the PI's who have 54 people living in their house and they all just lost their job....No. Do I think they should of used some birth control....yes!

723251 2008-11-27 20:48:00 Now while MR HN may be sitting on his billion, and may appear to be rather tight, I wonder if Mr Woolworths, or Mr Warehouse do the same to help their local community.

I don't know what Mr Woolworths does, he's an Australian after all, but Mr Warehouse set up the Tindall Foundation that has given $68M so far.

From an earlier era there is the J R McKenzie Trust.

"The Trust was set up in 1940 by John Robert McKenzie (later Sir John), the founder of the "McKenzies" chain of department stores. From the time the company started in 1910 until it was sold in 1980, one third of the profits were placed in the Trust for the benefit of the people of New Zealand. The total amount of grants made up to and including March 2008 is $62 million."

723252 2008-11-28 21:46:00 there is an old saying... give a man a fish, feed him for a day
Teach a man to fish, feed him for life

Too often people throw money at a problem and hope it will go away. Lets look at the core isues and fix that. NO point throwing money at the end result, the problem still remains

A fair point, but I prefer this version of the saying:

Light a man a fire and he is warm for the night.
Set a man on a fire and he is warm for the rest of his life!

723253 2008-11-28 22:34:00 Incidentally, I did find that piece of journalism jibberish to be rather one-sided. Just another "lets hate the rich man" crap that some journo decided to dish out in the hope that by the time they introduced the poor Islander workers; people would feel sorry for them.

I work for Harvey Norman (thank you Rx for your nice stereotype).
Anyway, (just for the haters out there) most weekends I know our local store has a bar-b-q going for local groups looking to fundraise. HN supply the bar-b-q, gas, bread, and sausages as their contribution to it. And a staff member to help set it up and organise for that day/weekend.

Now while MR HN may be sitting on his billion, and may appear to be rather tight, I wonder if Mr Woolworths, or Mr Warehouse do the same to help their local community.

As for his ...

Sorry about that. I made an assumption based on the behaviour of just those staff members I had encountered.

723254 2008-11-29 05:47:00 The article is kind of cryptic, it seems like they have just taken a couple of lines out of an interview and done whatever they felt like.
He's a millionaire and he says what he thinks is the truth, good on him.
Doesn't mean he's right, but at least he's honest.

Except for his store prices lol

723256 2008-11-29 09:42:00 Sorry about that. I made an assumption based on the behaviour of just those staff members I had encountered. No worries. You're right though for approx half of them :p Myth (110)
723257 2008-12-01 00:28:00 Well, they have made such an impression that I will never meet any more of them at their work. :horrified R2x1 (4628)
