835351 2010-04-23 05:01:00 I am trying to install MSSE on a school network.
MSSE doesn't ask for a proxy or the internet access un and password.
Is there a way to do this?

835352 2010-04-23 05:13:00 No because it doesnt have either option. Why would it ask for a username or password? Its an AV program, not a firewall Speedy Gonzales (78)
835353 2010-04-23 05:17:00 Is there a recommended free anti-virus program that has this facility? NZHawk (4093)
835354 2010-04-23 05:25:00 Dont know. Avast may. But I havent used Avast since 4.8 was around (its now up to v5). You may need a Security suite to do what you want to do. I have no idea which one tho. I'm not using a separate firewall.

But I doubt any will have an option to connect to the internet. Since, most of them need to be on the net to update. Otherwise there's no point in installing it in the first place. It wont protect anything

MSE is not licenced for business (this includes schools.) You would need to purchase MS Forefront. Or use the MOE provided AV, which is Symantec Endpoint these days.

835357 2010-05-06 11:06:00 There still should be an option - what if you used a proxy at home for some reason?

Besides, this might be a personal computer and he's just using the school's internet connection...

I would have expected it would follow whatever settings were in Internet Explorer though...

As would I.

Personally I'd take a "few day old" MSSE over Symantec or McAfee any day :D

835359 2010-05-07 00:09:00 Although if the password is changed regularly or each user has to login to the Internet proxy with their own password, MSSE may only be able to use the Internet once this has been done. Agent_24 (57)
835360 2010-05-08 01:29:00 The free AVs probably figure that for the amount of home users who run proxys that require authentication, it isn't worth putting any effort into that area.

Symantec Endpoint seems to be a much more effective anti-virus than etrust, but it sucks that it can't update off a linux server like Etrust did. One of the schools I look after purchased a smartnet linux server because it was perfect for them before the ministry switched AV providers.
