723355 2008-11-27 01:18:00 I just received the Summer 08 brochure from the AA.

In it there is an article about the turning right at intersections rule.

The rule was changed in 1977 to it's current form and there is a proposal to revert back to how it used to be which would be great.

From the Magazine:-
"The current give way rule was introduced in 1977 and holds that a vehicle turning right takes precedence over a vehicle turning left. The rule came from Victoria, Australia originally to assist trams on Melbourne's streets. But Victoria changed back in 1993 and experienced a decline in intersection crashes.

Today, New Zealand is the only country in the world with this priority rule"

To say that NZ is the only country with a rule like that isn't totally correct.

In New South Wales if you are turning left in a slip lane you give way to right turning traffic but if there's no slip lane the left turning traffic doesn't give way to right turning traffic. The slip lane could be just painted on the road.

I'd give way to anyone that could drive through my driver's door :)

723359 2008-11-27 01:55:00 It should be changed. The way the current law works is BS and causes all kinds of problems. wratterus (105)
723360 2008-11-27 01:56:00 I did not say it as such Paul, I just copied from the magazine. I just have to assume AA had their facts correct. Bantu (52)
723361 2008-11-27 02:14:00 It does not seem to matter what the rule is in any event.

There are too many people who either don't know the rule or simply ignore it.

723362 2008-11-27 03:25:00 I nearly got totalled yesterday by someone who had their own interpretation of the give way rule. Basically it went: Indicate then turn into traffic in front of straight through traffic (i.e. me).

Luckily my lightning fast reflexes, nurtured through years of first person shooters, averted disaster. And people say violent computer games are bad. Go figure.

723363 2008-11-27 03:32:00 As long as everyone follows it, I don't see the problem.

I find it quite useful, the person turning left holds the traffic for the right hand turner, letting them merge faster. If people actually followed it, there would be less congestion.

It's just that people are too stupid to get it. It's simple. If they're on your right, and you're turning left you give way. If not, then you don't.

Any learner driver will tell you that.

Road rules - lots of people either dont know them or they have their own set of rules, or make them up as they go. :( One of the common "event" is come out a side street onto the main flow of traffic - never look and expect there to be no one coming
