Mr Harvey, who is worth A$1.8 billion in money terms, was asked about the good works he and his business do in the community. He replied that giving money to people who "are not putting anything back into the community" is like "helping a whole heap of no-hopers to survive for no good reason".

723243 2008-11-26 23:47:00 Stupidity is apparent at all levels of HN, it must be a prerequisite to be on staff. R2x1 (4628)

723245 2008-11-27 03:51:00 Two kinds of people in this world, compassionate ones and those who are not. I like to think of myself as belonging to the former, and Mr Harvey with all his millions, is a pretty miserable @%^$#@!

Possibly depends on what you consider the middle. Cicero probably considers Genghis Khan was a sloppy pink liberal.

723248 2008-11-27 09:49:00 Incidentally, I did find that piece of journalism jibberish to be rather one-sided. Just another "lets hate the rich man" crap that some journo decided to dish out in the hope that by the time they introduced the poor Islander workers; people would feel sorry for them.

I work for Harvey Norman (thank you Rx for your nice stereotype).
Anyway, (just for the haters out there) most weekends I know our local store has a bar-b-q going for local groups looking to fundraise. HN supply the bar-b-q, gas, bread, and sausages as their contribution to it. And a staff member to help set it up and organise for that day/weekend.

Now while MR HN may be sitting on his billion, and may appear to be rather tight, I wonder if Mr Woolworths, or Mr Warehouse do the same to help their local community.

As for his

there is an old saying... give a man a fish, feed him for a day
Teach a man to fish, feed him for life

Too often people throw money at a problem and hope it will go away. Lets look at the core isues and fix that. NO point throwing money at the end result, the problem still remains

Yep.
The point is spend the money in a way which will help long term rather than short term.
Training still costs money.
