724601 2008-12-01 06:09:00 Hello all

Was just wondering, is it possible to claim a manufacture's warranty without having a receipt? Cos I've been looking on TM for some time now and across this rather good deal on this "new" laptop. However although new, the seller cannot provide any receipt for it. The seller claims the 3 laptops that he is selling are unopened and has one year manufacture warranty on it. However due to previous warranty experiences, a receipt was always necessary.

So would just like to ask the experts here on what you guys/girls reckon about this.

Its a HP laptop if that helps.

Many thanks in advance.

724602 2008-12-01 06:14:00 Well if they are selling three new laptops without receipts it sounds dodgey to me.
There have been a lot of scams on TradeMe with "new laptops" involved so I would be cautious.
Do you have a link to the auction?
Does the seller have good feedback?

Yeah it does sound bit dodgey huh, seller hasnt answered my question about the warranty yet as well :S

Though on the other hand, what about if items that are gifts from friends? eg christmas presents? How do one claim warranty on those things? This question is not related to the auction, just out of curiosity ^^

724605 2008-12-01 06:26:00 This is the auction in the Q&A that stated no receipt is available

724606 2008-12-01 06:36:00 Personally - being a reseller myself - it smells of dishonesty - Why no receipt ?

As for the other "off topic" question
Though on the other hand, what about if items that are gifts from friends? eg christmas presents? How do one claim warranty on those things? Same would apply, if you needed a warranty claim, you would need some proof of purchase - even it it was from the "giver" of the gift, other wise how does the shop know where it was purchased from, and how long ago ?

Think about it from the shop owners view - someone walks in to their shop - saying "this ???" is faulty, it was brought from here - general first response - do you have the receipt please ? Other wise how does the shop owner Know it was not purchased from some other place ??

Most laptops / PC's if they require a warranty claim the fist place it has to go back to is the seller - not the manufacture.

724607 2008-12-01 06:56:00 Hahaha withdrawn in the last minute. Wainuitech, you wouldnt have anything to do with the withdraw, would you? :P

Anyways, thanks for the heads up. Was really unsure about this, especially with no receipt.

As for the off topic question reply, yeah always though that if no receipt were supplied by the buyer, how would they know when the warranty date starts etc ><

But in the case you gave, where its buyer and retail seller etc. I can understand a receipt is relatively important, due to the item could be purchased else where. But about manufactures, as they are the one who supplies the item themselves? As some LCD Tv I have came across that has 1 year warranty with the seller but the remaining 2 year warranty is with the manufacture. Is it just as important for manufactures to have receipt from customers as it is to normal retail sellers?

:)

724608 2008-12-02 09:42:00 The serial number alone is sufficient to track the date of sale, the retailer and the purchaser. If the dealer won't play ball and check his records, you can go to the agent/importer and get the info.

They can't cop out of warranty obligations that easily, the retailer knows damned well what serial numbers he bought in, and if he didn't, he'd lose half his stock to his own staff overnight. Mind you, it sounds like that seller was shonky anyway.

Cheers
