| 836691 | 2009-12-05 06:53:00 | Have been given a Compaq Evo desktop to look at, gets just past the loading screen and then just before it gets to the OS itself, the computer throws a quick blue screen then reboots. Was thinking it was probably OS needing repair, but while looking under the hood to add a drive to copy to, I notice 2 bulging capacitors. Is it worth it to replace these caps? Client is a young student. I am trying to hook up with another Evo that belongs to someone else but is spare to their needs. But if I can't, well ... |

Or remove the hdd put it in a working system, then scan it It's an idea to try, if you can eliminate the capacitors as the failure point then a repair would almost certainly be worth it. But he already said the capacitors are bulging - so they have certainly failed. No amount of safe mode or scanning will fix that! Sure, the BSOD might not be caused by the capacitors - but they will certainly cause some problems eventually if they aren't yet. Myth: If the board will still POST (even if windows crashes) with the faulty capacitors then you have a high chance of a successful repair. If you know what you're doing replacing them then it should also be cheap and probably worthwhile. But remember, just because only 2 are visibly faulty, does not mean the others are not. You should replace all the capacitors because the rest will most likely be in as just as bad condition (or near it) |
