836330 2009-12-04 04:13:00 In case you don't know, I have somehow been successful at getting PCLOS to run on one of my auxiliary computers - so far so good .

I am going to try something that only I can screw up - so I wanted to ask some questions first .

If I have a good - clean - new running version of XP-Pro on one hdd, can I install another hdd and put PCLOS on it and then get a dual-boot running that way?

Will PCLOS be able to use grub if XP is on a totally different hdd?

Since I'm going to relegate my old Soyo to new and lowered status when I get this other unit running/built - I would like to be able to associate all the MP3s I have on a pair of 500G hdds and send them to the XP-side of the new 1TB hdd that I'll install later .

All this came about when I discovered that my old installation of XP-P was somehow either corrupted or had too much crappola in it and was driving my files crazy .

Would it be a good idea to use something like Ubuntu Live to get the files OFF the old hdd and copy them to the new 1TB hdd and would I just unplug the new XP-P version hdd and let the Live cd get it all done for me?

Maybe I should just get an external archive hdd and drop all the MP3s on it and then get the new XP-P to grab them from it?

Huh? :waughh:

836331 2009-12-04 07:26:00 Have read your post several times and am not quite clear about what drive is going where with what OS on it when???

It is easier for the beginner to install Windows first (from the oldest to the newest if more than one version) then Linux last. Usually GRUB will pick up all OSs no matter what drive they are on.

836332 2009-12-04 07:41:00 Drive "A" is now loaded with XP-P

Drive "B" will have PCLOS on it and another really huge area for video-rips .

So - my assumption is that grub will find them both? Right?

I intend to remove "A" while "B"gets the PCLOS installation - and will grub find "A" with XP-P when I boot up?

Maybe - MAYBE I will goof around and try to install Kubuntu too on "B" just for kicks - good idea or not?

836333 2009-12-04 07:49:00 All will probably go fine until you remove "A". GRUB is in two parts - in the MBR (Master Boot Record) and a Linux partition. Removing "A" will therefore make your system unbootable - but repairable by booting to a CD and re-writing the first part of GRUB.

Before long you will have to become familiar with how GRUB works. There is a big change happening so it depends on whether you are using GRUB legacy or GRUB2.

When you install two or more Linux distributions, the second part of GRUB resides only in one of the distributions. Deleting the wrong one will make the system unbootable.

Aha! I see what you mean . If I install both Kubuntu and PCLOS, then it's the best thing to do to leave them both alone in the future .

As far as "rewriting grub" goes - well the learning curve is nearly vertical here! :stare:
