724218 2008-11-30 00:33:00 For what it’s worth I have seen an E-Mail from a commercial pilot presently flying, to another retired pilot.

In brief he states he wouldn’t fly, or fly in, an Airbus because of the control design.

Apparently it is all computerised and fibre optic cable, all through, with no manual override as in the past (he mentions Boeings). It would seem that even if you disengage the automatic pilot, you are still relying on the computers to fly the darn thing. Then, if the pilot and co-pilot both operate the same control at the same time it has a hissy fit while it sorts itself out.

Remember a few weeks ago one flying out of Perth gave the pilots a front screen view of the Indian Ocean. Fortunately they had height on their side and managed to sort it out whilst a few passengers were floating around the overhead lockers.

He claims in his E-Mail that he fears the big one will also have all the same problems. :dogeye:

Anyway, having read and digested the E-Mail you won’t get me on an Airbus. :D

724219 2008-11-30 00:50:00 how ever in this case we have some of the most experanced pilots in the world.

(apparently) it was being flown by German pilots from XL, still registered as a German flight and therefore being flown under European airspace regulations.

The only 'relationship' to Air NZ is (was) the paintjob.

And a couple of pax.

personally, I reckon we're going to see some similarities between the Perth 'incident' and the most recent one.

Could be wrong, but that's my guess.

724221 2008-11-30 20:07:00 The A380 when it came to Auckland made an aborted landing because because the computer detected wind share and applied full power to go around.

I would still fly on a Airbus. The chances of it happening while you are on the plane would be as great as getting struck by lightening.

100% Fly by wire which means an electrical signal is given to an flight surface acuator to move has always worried me.
You cant beat a followup mechanical linkage (cables pulleys rods bellcranks etc )dosent matter how many channels of fly by wire your life is hanging on electrons making it to the hydraulic acuator at the flight control surface.
Going by the amount of money I pay an auto sparky to fix electrical problems on my buses looks like airplanes arent much better.
Wind shear sucks worse place I have found is Tauramanui airfeild nice approach next thing you are a metre off the manukas. Which is strange because its supposed to be the calmest place in NZ.

Umm, nevermind the 5 Air New Zealand staff on it.

Oh, and the fact just before that test fight, it had been refitted for Air New Zealand regulations.

But had there not been 5 kiwis on board, I don't think it would've barely made the news (like it did anyway) here.

I suspect that's why Air NZ is doing the big pr job. To the worlds media it looks like a Air NZ plane because of the paint job..

724225 2008-12-02 06:13:00 Is it just me, or is the media pretty ....cant think of the word, the thing is dumb because now they are just interviewing sad family members and really, its like the media have no shame and let them greive while they sort stuff out, i supose the families have to give permission, but it just seems media types have no class or brains what so ever. Maybe thats why they have to report on other people because they are just so thick themselves.

Or maybe im just looking for a moan and my 16 hour shifts are starting to get to me. Maybe lol

724226 2008-12-02 06:16:00 They're probably just trying to providie "news" on the whole incident until they have some real news (ie the cause) --Wolf-- (128)
724227 2008-12-02 06:50:00 Spoke to a couple of friends on the internet last night, one in Australia and the other in Scotland and none of them had heard of the crash. They are both interested in aviation.
To me the crash is not very significant, it happened along way away, although sad there were only four NZers on board who got killed. I think the NZ media are short of a good story at the moment. I too am interested in aviation.
