836114 2009-12-03 20:13:00 Avast is a worry thats why I use AVG.

All antiviruses can have false positives. Mine lately keeps whinging about some files in my Half Life 2 folder, and I reinstalled it just in case.
I told it to ignore it from now on, can't be bothered emailing NOD32 about it, it will sort itself with whatever def update next.

AVG is no different.

836115 2009-12-03 20:15:00 For anyone having the problems with files damaged / deleted by Avast - heres their repair article (forum.avast.com)

At least they did a good screwup and got most OS's :D

LOL if you are gonna get fired you may as well screw up properly??

836116 2009-12-03 20:32:00 I think they will find that people are going to have bigger problems with their computers than a few false positive .exe's in the virus vault, this episode completely trashed my operating system. zqwerty (97)
836117 2009-12-03 20:41:00 May I assume that it is safe to turn ON the automatic update now? bk T (215)
836118 2009-12-03 20:52:00 Yes it is now safe to resume auto updates. The latest signature file has fixed the problem McRuff (12291)
836119 2009-12-03 22:19:00 Geez. had a lady ring me about this. All it did was stick her usage monitor .exe and 2 spybot files in the vault. Simple matter of restoring them back out. Certainly didn't flag any system files or anything. A big non-event so far really.
Took me about 2 minutes to show her how to retrieve from the vault then we had a nice chat, cup of tea and walk round the garden.

836120 2009-12-04 01:32:00 So - it was a real problem, and not something I did!!!!

I finally ditched Avast (one hell of a job) and am now running MS Security Essentials.

Is there any explanation for what happened?

Ah - I have just seen the link to Avast's explanation.
