724702 2008-12-04 09:09:00 Norton is pretty useless. And don't let them trick you into the "You're only running 1 program" because you're probably running about 10 of them all hidden behind one interface.

I must say though, testing their 2009 beta I was kind of impressed.. Their installer was definitely faster, not sure about the program itself though as being a beta it wasn't the best..

"Is there anything worse than Norton?"

"Sure! A beta version of Norton!!"

724703 2008-12-04 19:40:00 I just like Norton because it's slick :) and it works for me :)

I don't know how people can bash it when they haven't tried it... (the new one) NIS 2009 and Norton 360 2.0 is amazing. I added it all up and it was only using about 15mb of ram?

Still feels faster than AVG :P

Still feels faster than AVG :P Have tried Norton 360 New Version - did a straight back to back test - had a customers drive, they had AVG - full of spyware + viruses, cloned the drive - removed AVG, installed Norton 360 latest version - did a scan removed several infections, then on the cloned drive installed Nod32 - that removed an additional 6 viruses from memory that Norton missed, and when antispyware software was run on both drives they removed close to 150 infections - The 360 said it was clean, when it wasn't.

Yes it was faster and not quite a system hog as the previous versions - but not very good if it says a PC is clean when it isn't. I have still seen it cause all sorts of problem that can only be fixed by removal. The symantec site provide a tool to remove the software when it corrupts -
Use the Norton Removal Tool to remove a failed installation or a damaged Norton product First line from that Symantec site - not exactly encouraging

BUT as mentioned before - its a nice gesture to give it away- someone may be interested.

Hey Wainuitech

If you get a chance, you should try NIS 2009~ I downloaded the trial and it was absolutley amazing. Installed in about half a minute, and a quick scan took about four minutes on my laptop.

I took a test PC (Pentium 4 3.20GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD and NVIDIA 6600 graphics), and loaded it up with adware, spyware, everything I could find, until nothing would work.

Installation was smooth, and on this old thing took just over a minute. Symantec no longer use Windows Installer, which they blamed for the slow slow installation speeds, and built their own on top of Norton Ghost technologies. There was no noticeable impact on system performance, and I would even go to saying it felt the same as NOD32. After Install, Norton scanned, and it took along 286 infections with it. What amazed me the most however was the fact that CPU Usage stayed under ten percent for the most part, only spiking up to around 80 four or five times.

This scan took just over ten minutes.

I liked Norton Insight too~ it analyzes your computer usage, and works out which areas need to be scanned, and which don't- Kind of like a trust sector for some, and this means it won't scan these files in quick scan. You have the option of telling it to scan certain files, should you choose to turn it on.

Definitions were updated every five to ten minutes, which was quite impressive, and the dreaded liveupdate is gone, to be replaced with rapidpulse, which is finally part of the norton interface and not a separate application. It's fast, and effective, though would probably be a burden for people who are still on dial up.

Symantec have FINALLY improved their customer support. I made a problem by deleting a couple of DLL files out of the engine folder. I fired up norton, and it told me it was fixing itself. Norton restarted itself, and it was back to normal. I then went onto Symantec's website to find that all Norton phone support is now free free free! Finally! Along with this, they also have the option of email or Online Chat, which uses a Java application. Through this, the Norton Reps can take control of your PC, or watch what you are doing to try and help you fix problems. Whilst it's a 24/7 service, the wait times are quite long and they could have more staff onto it. However , once I finally got on, the staff were polite, helpful, and treated me like I knew nothing about computers , going easy on the instructions. This would be like the majority of the people who use the product.

And finally, their Uninstall tool actually works. I couldn't find anything else but Licensing Information left over. Uninstall took about two minutes.

So, it seems like they have finally made something that works well. But, don't take my word for it, take off AVG and try it for yourself :)

I really wish I knew how to touch type, that took ages.. ;)

724708 2008-12-04 21:09:00 Great post Mabix

I have always been a hater of Norton due to its bloatware etc.

But I am getting sick of the problems with my AVG free - corrupt files - updates failing to be downloaded and installed. And some of the others do not look perfect either. And I would love to be able to BUY one app that did firewall, anti virus, anti spyware and that worked well. That would save me lots of time.

Yes I know what you mean about typing.
