723632 2008-11-28 01:20:00 Looks good, though at 200 you can only get a 4670 for around 170ish. 4670 is not as good as a 9600GT, maybe somewhere around a G80 8800GTS. Still decent, I would call it a casual gaming card. qazwsxokmijn (102)

So Nomad I take it a Mac is now out of your equation?

723634 2008-11-28 02:15:00 Yeah .. Quad Cores can be beneficial in the future when the software supports, it.

Mac Pro are outside my price range.
iMac are only dual core and limited to 4GB.

Plus that for really good displays there are photographic LCDs that is way more than the Apples not that I can afford it thou at $6k :D

723635 2008-11-28 06:56:00 I can't say I blame you for your decision.

You can always add more this, that and the other later if you want to.

723636 2008-11-28 07:03:00 Hey guys, I did some reading off some test charts, what about a video card from ATI 3850/3870 or even a 4850?

2GB to begin.
Q6600 Intel.
That Asus mobo.

I thought and thought, but nah .. not getting a iCore, I can get a another CPU/mobo at a later stage and then maybe have a spare PC ....

I was looking at prices and test charts - what happened to AMD. It is like the ATI / Intel now .......

723637 2008-11-28 07:30:00 Can someone pls give me a hand for the video cards. Reading the charts off tomshardware.com and confused. Before I was looking at 3D Marks score then I looked at games and they differ a lot. They say things like CF, CF SLI, SLI, 3SLI, GT, GTS, GTX, ULTRA, OC. What does this mean?

8800GTS has 320MB or 640MB right but a huge diff in prices ...
Before wasn't it look at the chipset and not much on the MB .. what is it these days?
What should I look for?
Nomad (952)
723638 2008-11-28 11:15:00 CF = Crossfire
SLI = Scalable Link Interface
GT, GTS, GTX, Ultra = Good, gooder, gooderer, goodest

SLI and CF are just ways of saying you can link two graphics cards together.

OC = Overclock, making your processor clock higher than it does at stock.
Underclocking exists too, for those who want less heat and power consumption. Apparently quite effective sometimes.

You want to look at a mix between the chipset and the amount of RAM. Most have 512MB these days, but you can get 4850's with 1GB, and the GTX280 has a GB too. The 260 has some weird amount too, I've never investigated them, so can't tell you how much. 512 should be heaps for only occasional gaming, and the cards that normally have 512 often don't perform too much better with 1GB.

723639 2008-11-28 11:33:00 Hey thanks for that.

Now .. basically I have read what is the best bang for buck review.
GF 9600GT 512MB - how is this one?
The GF 8800GT 512MB was also the next category best buy but they said it is more or less the same as the one above (the best buy for a cheaper price category).

Are either of these two sufficient for the occasional game?

It said GF 9600GT better than ATI 3870.
Nomad (952)
723640 2008-11-28 19:16:00 As it says the 9600GT is comparable to the 8800GT. I have a 8800GTS which is slower then the 8800GT and can run the likes of Crysis at 1680 x 1050 on mainstream settings without a problem.

So for the occasional game one of those should be fine. What res do you plan on using?
