724520 2008-12-01 03:03:00 We are considering installing a tubular skylight, eg the Skytube and SolaBrite type of thing, to get some natural light into a rather dark small room.

Does anyone here have one and if so, what brand? Are you happy with it? Do they have any drawbacks/negative aspects to them?

724521 2008-12-01 03:09:00 Havn't got one, but seem quite a few and they seem to be quite effective.

Nowhere as good as a full on skylite, but as a tradeoff, they are good.

724522 2008-12-01 03:25:00 We had one installed in a particularly dark area of our last home. It was in the kitchen and made a huge difference. It was a good option to a skylight for us. Didn't need the cleaning a skylight would have, also cheaper. No leaking during heavy rainstorms; as I have seen happen with some skylights. Installation was well done.

It's quite a few years since we left that house so I cannot remember which company, but I think it was Solatube.

Yeah, they have one in the bathroom of a Picton cottage we stay at and it's brilliant. No idea what brand it is though or whether there are any drawbacks.

Marnie, what side of the house was your kitchen on?

724524 2008-12-01 06:58:00 Friends have one (Solatube) in a formerly dark corner of the lounge, it is on the south side of the roof and seems to give plenty of light without the heat gain/loss associated with skylights. It seems fairly quiet in heavy rain too. R2x1 (4628)
724525 2008-12-02 18:32:00 We have Solar Tubes fitted in both our bathrooms and they make a big difference..like having the light on all the time. You can have a light built into them and these have also got an extractor fan built in. muzza (7316)
724526 2008-12-02 21:25:00 Cheers R2x1 and muzza. Will give SolarTube a buzz and get them around for a quote after I've got a few other things sorted first. FoxyMX (5)
724527 2008-12-02 22:20:00 Solar Tube, that was the name I was trying to remember! :clap wratterus (105)
