723725 2008-11-27 20:34:00 Bit slow this morning, though I'd post about a bit of hardware I purchased recently.

Linksys WAG160N. (www-au.linksys.com)

My Dynalink thats been going fine for about 4 years and is still going, but after god knows how many TB of data going through it I'm sure the performance of it has been impaired a little, and it's time for an upgrade. It owes me nothing!

Decided I'd buy quality this time, and I've been blown away by the new linksys. Wireless reception is brilliant, even with G, as I havn't got any N gear yet. The connection to the exchange is rock solid, not a single disconnection in 48 hours, I would have had 1 or 2 normally with the dynalink by then.

It handles a heavy data load brilliantly.

The GUI is very well laid out and easy to understand, and it is absolutley packed with features.

It looks awesome, and is very small and light, the PSU is designed peoperly and is narrower than your average plug, no more of these stupid fat plugs clogging the multi board up. Only downside there is, being the stupid 'piano black' finish, that looks great but is completley impracticle, it attracts dust and fingerprints like nothing else. To quote PC World - "My router is not a Steinway, people".

Apart from that, I still highly recommend it for anyone looking for a new 4 port ADSL2+ capable router with wireless N.

I'm going to be sticking with Linksys gear from now on.
:)

723726 2008-11-27 20:46:00 Well done wratterus, you have moved up in the world. All my stuff is Linksys.
Had a WRT54GX_v2.0 at first and updated to a WRVS4400N over a year ago. Both work fine.

I am all wired here but the 2 x iPod Touches and PS3 use the Wireless for updates. I must hardwire the PS3 one day, it is just an awkward room to wire inside the wall. Wife got very hostile last time I cut open the wall in 3 places to run a wire down the inside, I best not do that again. It was nothing that a bit of plaster and paint could not fix even though the house at the time was only 2 months old.

723727 2008-11-27 23:00:00 I don't know if Linksys is better than all the others or all the others are just crap but Linksys FTW! Never buy anything else. beeswax34 (63)
723728 2008-11-27 23:58:00 Well I just got an ASUS WL-600G router and an ASUS wifi card.
The router has 4 LAN ports, wifi and a print server via USB with 2 USB ports.
Came with a filter and a splitter.

Plugged it in, set it up, tested net - OK via LAN.
Unplugged LAN, wifi card finds network, no *&^%# web pages. No ping.
Go back to LAN - no web pages, no ping.
Re-do it 3 times. Zilch.
Ring provider - check settings - all OK, he says re-do it one more time. OK, oh look because I have him on the phone while I look like a half-wit - it decides its working again.

Hang up, unplug LAN and try wifi again. Perfect.
Wifi just doesn't like me.
Its why I got the thing, my Billion router was fine but if I have to help customers with this stuff then I need to figure out why this crap happens.

You can spend a lot of time on the Whirlpool DSL Hardware forums reading Linksys horror stories. Seems to depend on how developed the firmware was when you started. Maybe don't buy a new model :p

723730 2008-11-28 01:48:00 I have had several linksys products....the wag54g v1 & v2 died.....however I was constantly changing usernames and pw's for vpn direct connections....the switches gave up in the end and the wireless g with IP ph's kept on disconnecting...

Using the wag200 at present and been faultless for over 4 months now....

I do like cisco products....

Wratt, pity it isnt gigabyte switch...would go nice with a NAS box

Yeah, that was an extra $150 or so, will be a feature on the next one though.

723732 2009-01-04 22:03:00 Sorry to resurrect this thread, but, Wratterus, I was wondering how your WAG160N has been performing. I have one on a client site and its wireless locks up pretty frequently which is not uncommon going by some postings of other hacked off owners. linw (53)
723733 2009-01-04 22:06:00 Been working flawlessly - havn't had to do a single restart since I started this thread. wratterus (105)
723734 2009-01-04 22:50:00 linw: What firmware version you using?

I want one of Pcteks WL-600G's :D

Probably a moot point now but I thought I'd add my 2c to the thread
I only use Linksys for ADSL Routers & VoIP Phones / ATAs, wouldnt buy anything else! :)
Use Asus for the Wireless routers though, love them! They're cheap as chips, reliable as hell and its dead simple to chuck DD-WRT on them. Range could be a little better, but its pretty good all things considered :)
