836271 2009-12-04 02:48:00 Thats a lot of work if only doing one server/PC - using sysprep in XP is generally used when doing many machines Via the one image. (usually all with the same hardware) Microsoft Instructions (support.microsoft.com) are a little better.

Basically once sysprep is run, DONT reboot the PC normally to image it , as it will run the commands its been given.

Once Sysprep has been run you need to use a bootable imaging CD/Tool ( or Ghost bootable floppy) to make the Image, something like Acronis true image, then that image can be imaged back to the other hardware - all going well it will start and load as its meant to.

One of the biggest problems is if the hardware is too different from the original - it can BSOD on you.

836272 2009-12-04 02:57:00 I was told that there was some way that would make it so you could just use the image on any pc no matter what hardware. Cant remember what it was though. Problem is the hardware that the image is going on to is different from the machine I was going to make the image on. nedkelly (9059)
836273 2009-12-04 03:15:00 We use and sell ShadowProtect.
When restoring an image, taken with SP, onto a totally different machine you can tell it to do a Hardware Independent Restore.
What that does is, once the image has been put on to the new machine, it scans the new machine hardware and installs any drivers as required.
If it doesn't have the drivers in its database to install you are given the option to install them from USB or CD etc, only ever had to do this with some RAID controllers.

Personally I would recommend you use the native Microsoft deployment tools, which are available for free, try those before you go out and buy anything

Checkout Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010
technet.microsoft.com

MDT can use ImageX: Create a Windows PE disk (including the ImageX tool). Sysprep your reference computer and then boot from the Windows PE disk and use ImageX to capture the image.

Use Windows Deployment Services (WDS). Add a boot image to the WDS. Create a capture boot image based on this boot image and then add it to the WDS. PXE boot the reference computer into the capture boot image and then capture the system.

836276 2009-12-04 06:22:00 hang on is it acronis that also does that? Acronis work station with Universal restore allows one image to be put on just about any hardware - much the same way as CYaBro pointed out with ShadowProtect.

As pointed out previously, if only doing one its a lot of work for one install, the time taken by a person mucking about making images, a complete install could have been done.
