727291 2008-12-10 01:45:00 Anyone living in Auckland or big cities where they have installed Security Alarm system in their home?

My friend is wanting to have someone installing alarm system at her place up in Auckland as the previous owner of the house has had his home burgled.

I am in at the house for the next 4 weeks so want to help her out.

Probably is I don't know where to start.

Since she has just moved in she didn't get a telephone book.

Where do you get a free copy of the telephone book from?

727293 2008-12-10 02:53:00 The only home security alarm is a monitored alarm. Anything less is next to useless.

A house alarm that only makes a noise is of little use. Everyone in the neighbourhood can hear it - everyone except you - the person who really needs to know and you can't reasonably expect your neighbour to check your property when the alarm sounds. The burglar may be armed, or at least bigger than your neighbour. Besides, false alarms not only annoy the neighbours but after a while they tend to ignore it. "Oh no, not their bloody alarm, again!"

A non monitored alarm is as useless as a car alarm. They tend to annoy but these days false alarms are that common that people don't even look around to see which car it is. What a waste of money!:illogical

A monitored alarm could be looked after by one of the many security firms or you could set it so it will call your mobile when it is triggered. One of these options is much more sensible than an expensive noise maker.

727294 2008-12-10 04:01:00 You can get free copies from the Post Shop. If you call the Yellow Pages people up, they might deliver them to you as well. beeswax34 (63)
727295 2008-12-10 04:10:00 The only home security alarm is a monitored alarm Can vouch for that  Ours went off one day - and within 1 minute of it going off I got a call from chubb asking if it was set off by any one by mistake.

They simply call a pre designated number - if no one answers, or answers and cant give the "pre designated" response code, they ring my cell, if still no answer they send someone around.

Has your friend got good quality deadlocks on her doors. If her external doors have glass in them replace them with solid doors. Put locks on easy to each windows and install net curtains to all windows.
A good burglar can be in and out of your home within 30 secs, so you want an alarm to scare them away. Make the alarm as loud as possible inside the house. A monitored alarm only tells someone that it has gone off, by the time someone arrives to check they have long buggered off.

727298 2008-12-10 23:52:00 We have a good neigbourhoood watch in our street. If an alarm goes off and neigbours hear it they always investigate. I take a crowbar or baseball bat when I investigate neigbours alarms and run as quickly as possible to get there before any possible crook absconds. 10 years of running and they all have been false alarms usually another 2 or so neigbs turn up as well. 1 has a golf club, 1 machete other a wheel brace.
Monitored alarm just tells you earlier that you have been burgled thats all.

727299 2008-12-11 00:14:00 Yep, any alarm I hear (at night) I always go walkabout with a heavey blunt object. Wrecking bar is the preferred device. :)

If nothing else, a car alarm is a deterrent. I have a 5 star uniden alarm in my car, damn high tech thing it is too.

A damned expensive deterrent! Does not stop anybody stealing the car, but it might make a potential thief think again.

My "car alarm" only cost me $5 and an hour to install. There are two stickers on each side window declaring that "this vehicle is alarmed." An LED flashes brightly on the dash. It does not have a noise maker and appears to be as effective as a deterrent as any "real" car alarm.
