| 726255 | 2008-12-06 19:24:00 | Last night the TV appeared to have lost blue. It was 90% green with a few purple looking splotches. IT was so awful you couldn't make out the picture. Turned it off for an hour and its back to normal. But. Is it likely to be fatal? Should we replace it? |

| 726257 | 2008-12-06 20:43:00 | Sounds like its starting to fail - we had a Philips do similar - lovely pink in the top 1/4 of the corners, then piss yellow in the opposite, real fun when trying to watch a program. Turn it off for a while and it came right. It was a CRT. |

There are a couple of Panasonic CRTs for sale on TM down this way.....what do you think, should I buy one or should I just persist with the Phillips...........Its only done it once so far. LCD/Plasma is not in the budget, not even used. |

| 726259 | 2008-12-06 20:59:00 | If it doesn't do it again for a while - prob wouldn't worry about it, more than likely a sign the tube is starting to play sillies though. The Philips one we had was a 32" wide screen , something similar to This one on trademe (www.trademe.co.nz) The repair shop mentioned some of them have problems some dont - ours was only just under a year old ( end of line stock). We ended up getting a 32" wide screen Teac - cheap thing, but its worked perfectly - couldn't afford a LCD at the time either, we do have one now as well, in the other lounge, but that was save the pennies till we could afford it. |

| 726264 | 2008-12-08 01:59:00 | Loss of one gun gives a colour cast across the whole screen: No Red gives Cyan No Blue gives Yellow No Green gives Purple Colour drive faults will produce uniform effects across the whole screen. It doesn't sound like any of the above so the CRT is probably OK, and it is unlikely to be an electronic fault because they don't produce blotches either. Coloured blotches are created by either a warped shadowmask (very rare unless dropped on its face) or failure of the degaussing (demagnetising) circuit. You can get a similar effect if you turn the TV around to a different angle if it was facing predominantly north or south when last turned on. If it was facing E-W then the effect is minimised. CRT TVs are sensitive to the earth's magnetic field, so much so that you need a different CRT for the northern hemisphere to that used in the southern, and there can be image displacement differences between the upper North Island and lower South Island The usual cause of blotches is habitually leaving it on standby when not using it and never turning the power off completely. Depending on the design, it may not get degaussed for weeks or months and something as simple as turning on or off a vacuum cleaner near it can corrupt the colour (magnetic pulse generated as the cleaner motor start/stops). If it comes right after being turned off at the wall for 10 minutes or so then turned on again, it was probably the latter, (as you have found) so long as your description of the symptoms was accurate.
