726063 2008-12-05 21:50:00 Hi Guys

As you will see we have a new product that we want to advertise.

Advertising is SO expensive.

Eg a bill board costs about $1,000 a month.

The back of a bus costs about $1,000 a month.

A Page in New Idea or Womens Weekly costs $3,000 for one issue ! ( a thiord of a page costs $1,700)

To get some mail box fliers delivered costs $50 per 1,000

A small reasonable sized ad (12cm x 8cm) in a provincial newspaper costs $150

A small ad in The Listener (6cm a 4cm) costs $300.

All of these seem very dear or offer limited coverage.

Have you any suggestions ?

What is the best mass market magazine to advertise in for a general hardware product ?

726064 2008-12-05 22:03:00 If the product is any good, you could always try and get it on the hardware show, which I believe is on the living channel, hosted by"Cocksy". plod (107)

The paper depends where and which paper.
My ad in the Ensign for 6cm by 2 columns was $88, in the Newslink it was $42.

Mail box fliers are probably the best bet. There are different companies that do it, and prices vary.
Or stick it in the Herald - that gets you the North Island anyway......

726067 2008-12-06 04:17:00 Beware of mail box flyer distribution companies.

I used to use them a few years ago (PMP Distribution), can't remember how much they cost. It turns out only about half of your flyers make it to letterboxes, and that's IF the flyer boys do what they're meant to.

They give them deliberately more than they need, and instruct them to throw out the excess.

The good thing about flyers though is that you don't only get customers who want your product NOW, you get ones who are mildly interested and keep the flyer, and call you months later. Some have even called me 1 year or more after receiving a flyer.

726068 2008-12-06 04:31:00 I can't figure out what the hell your product is.

I know it's in your avatar, but it looks like a coffee mug buried in red play-doh.

Our product is the red play doh thing !

Its made of high quality abs plastic and you put your coffee mug in it and stops you knocking it over. The pic is very small so it is hard to see.

726071 2008-12-06 09:22:00 Digby - targetted marketing is the way to go - that's how you'll get the best bang for your buck. I would suggest you target marketing departments of large corporates (especially IT-related ones - we geeks live on coffee) or maybe the Innovations people... Maybe see what Computerworld would charge for a small ad...

I passed on your email to the Marketing manager where I'm currently working, but haven't heard anything back yet. Xmas silly season has started, so may not hear much until after Xmas.
