725442 2008-12-03 09:15:00 How do I solve this problem:
Greg puts his pet cats in a box to take them to his auntie's house. How many cats are there in the box:
a) If there were 21 more legs than tails?
b) If there were 14 more legs than eyes?

My daughter brought this home from school expecting me to help her out. But I can't solve it other than by trial and error. I know the answer is 7 for both the questions but don't really know how to show her the work out.

Can some wise person here explain the ways to solve problems of this nature?

Knowing that a typical cat has a tail and four legs:

1T -> 4L (i.e. 1 Tail = 4 Legs)
2T -> 8L
3T -> 12L....

Now let's focus on the difference (which tells us how many more legs are there compared to the number of tails):
4L - 1T = 3
8 - 2 = 6
12 - 3 = 9
16 - 4 = 12
20 - 5 = 15
24 - 6 = 18
28 - 7 = 21

A difference of 21 indicates that there are 28 legs. 28 / 4 = 7 cats

(My Theory) :)

Pretty sure most typical cats have four legs ...

edit: OK, so you worked that one out now and changed it. :p

725447 2008-12-03 09:29:00 b)

Same strategy as above. A cat has four legs and two eyes:

2E -> 4L
4E -> 8L

Let's focus on the difference now:
4L - 2E = 2
8 - 4 = 4
12 - 6 = 6
16 - 8 = 8
20 - 10 = 10
24 - 12 = 12
28 - 14 = 14

A difference of 14 indicates there are 28 legs in total. Divide 28 by four and you will get seven. There are seven cats in total.

I'm convinced with your answers. I can now explain it to my daughter.:thanks
