838238 2009-12-09 21:47:00 When I open the task manager and look at all my running processes, there are always about 25-30 "programs" running in the background, even when I have nothing in open windows.

I can't even begin to tell which programs are needed to keep Windows running and which aren't.

I want to free up as much memory as possible to make games run better.

Also, it would be nice if I could keep the unneeded programs from running in the first place on startup rather than just ending them each time I want to free up the RAM.

I'm not even sure where to begin on this, any suggestion or thoughts?

838239 2009-12-09 21:58:00 Oh oh I want to know too... I have played with msconfig? kind of thing and regedit etc many times but never once produced result better than a RAM upgrade!:( soulhound (15475)
838240 2009-12-09 22:03:00 It's worth nothing that the processes you see in Task Manager aren't all 'programs' as such; if there's nothing running in the Applications tab, most of the processes you see will be system processes and services, which usually need to be there.

Having said that, some programs such as Norton Antivirus, are notorious for having a heavy footprint, which is why we recommend alternatives.

Probably the best thing is to post a hijackthis log here, which lists all your startup entries. We can have a look and advise what you can remove safely.

838241 2009-12-09 22:05:00 What OS have you got? XP/Vista? msconfig is one way to keep programs from starting up at logon. Putting in more RAM is always a good option but depends on how many slots you have and what is the max RAM your motherboard supports. In Vista there's a service called Superfetch (en.wikipedia.org).. you could disable that but it is recommended to have it running as it does speed up the PC with commonly used programs. Hope this helps. ronyville (10611)
838242 2009-12-09 22:14:00 You could try turning off some of the services from running when the computer has booted up:

Start > Run > "services.msc"

Turn off with caution.

838243 2009-12-09 22:34:00 You could try turning off some of the services from running when the computer has booted up:

Start > Run > "services.msc"

Turn off with caution.

Helps if you know which ones:

Google Black Viper - they provide a list for the various versions of Windows, what they are, a cautious approach and a lets disable tons of them approach. Read that and with a bit of common sense you can do just fine.

Common sense - for instance if you use Wireless obviously you want it left on, if not, disable it and so on.

Msconfig is for disabling startup programs and if you have done all that and have plenty of RAM and it still runs like a sick snail, then it's time for a format and fresh install.

838246 2009-12-10 00:31:00 I'd suggest you get rid of McAfee too; it's very resource hungry much like Norton Antivirus, and not that good to be honest.

Suggest you get NOD32 as a replacement.

To uninstall McAfee, download and run their removal tool from here (download.mcafee.com)

Oh yes he has .
You don't NEED this stuff in startup .

And I'd dump McAfees and get a decent antivirus - NOD32 for a pay one or MS Security Essentials for free .

And get rid of AdAware - it's out of date and no good anymore anyway .
