you want to backup Windows 7 to an "image" and then restore that image onto other hardware?

start
backup
create a system image

You want to image a Windows 7 machine and deploy it automatically, roll it out to a bunch of workstations?

Use the IMAGEX command line from the Windows Automatated Installation Kit (WAIK)

838176 2009-12-09 23:12:00 Hi Nigel, just wanted a backup....the o/s is on a SSD which doesnt have TRIM firmware yet. There is allegedly firmware to be released this month, I just want an image in case the firmware naff's the SSD!

If 7 does an image, can you install the image back on the drive if a o/s is not found?

yes, you can boot up off your Windows 7 install DVD / USB key or even PXE boot off the network and restore from the image you took previously
