837706 2009-12-08 09:28:00 Just thought I'd post this for pure entertainment. Was restoring a backup from a CD and all of a sudden there was a big bang. The front of my PC case dislodged itself but the computer continued to run, except the CD ROM :) Anyway here are a few pictures...

837711 2009-12-08 11:57:00 I would send those photos to mythbusters, a while back they did a myth on exploding CD’s, but they could not get a CD to explode in a CD drive. stu161204 (123)

It's got nothing to do with the drive except how fast it can spin. The discs liable to fly apart are those with cracks radiating out from the hole in the middle. Disc holders that have the push in pop out centres help stop cracks caused by flexing the disc.

837714 2009-12-08 19:21:00 Yes this thread should be titled. My CD Exploded In Drive. Might be a good idea for a mod to change the title of this thread as it might give people the wrong impression.
:)

837715 2009-12-08 19:29:00 Yeah didn't really name the thread correctly now that I think about it, oh well.

I remember myth busters trying to destroy a CD like this and the only way they managed was to put the CD on an angle grinder as they spin much faster. This CD must have had a few cracks on it.
