837670 2009-12-08 07:22:00 Hi,
When I start Windows XP Professional it seems to load fine, but when it gets to the desktop there are no icon or taskbar I can press ctrl+alt+del and the window does come up but I can't run any programs from there. (Yes, I've tried Run>explorer but no error message or nothing) This is after I did a system recovery with the Windows XP disk.
Any and all help is much appreciated.

837671 2009-12-08 07:27:00 Did you have malware or something? Have you scanned it for malware recently? Post a hijackthis log, its below.

And get trojan remover below, update it then scan. If nothing works in normal windows, boot into safe mode / networking. Then do the above

837672 2009-12-08 07:35:00 Well I have Avast anti virus which is scanning my computer now (as it defaultly does as the screensaver). And it's been doing this for about an hour and hasn't returned any results. I don't have Hijack this on that computer and am not sure of how I would go about putting it on? jackinthebox11 (15498)
837673 2009-12-08 07:36:00 Where you wrote
This is after I did a system recovery with the Windows XP disk. Was it a Complete reinstall or a repair install -- What sort of system recovery do you mean exactly ??

PS: welcome to the PF1 forum BTW :)

837674 2009-12-08 07:40:00 I booted from the disk then went into install Windows XP (enter) then it showed currently installed versions and said to repair the selected version press R. It went through the process, rebooted, and carried on repairing but it had two error messages, one was about an Outlook file that couldn't be found and I can't remember the other one. But it continued after that. jackinthebox11 (15498)
837675 2009-12-08 07:41:00 Oh and thanks for the welcome :-) jackinthebox11 (15498)

So the PC youre talking about isnt connected to the internet? If it isnt, you could download it on the one youre on now. Then use a USB flash drive to copy hijackthis across to the other PC. WHAT was the reason for the repair?? malware? Was it crasing or something?

837677 2009-12-08 07:48:00 Okay here's some information I should have included at the start. Went to turn it on and the computer would start up but Windows wouldn't boot at all, the machine just kept restarting that's when I decided to try a repair. It was connected to the internet but I have it unconnected at the moment. I've tried plugging my flash drive in but there is no way of accessing it..
Actually... could I boot into safemode with command prompt then run the application off the flash drive with a command?? (not sure what to type though)

837678 2009-12-08 07:52:00 Reboot press / hold F8 down then select safe mode / networking. Does this work? If it works connect it again, then get hijackthis / Trojan remover. WHAT'S on the flash drive?? Is it bootable with DOS files on it? If its got windows apps on it, the programs probably wont run in dos. Whats the specs of this system? Speedy Gonzales (78)
837679 2009-12-08 07:57:00 In the post you say it kept restarting , exactly what point did it get to before it restarted, Eg: welcome screen, then loading drivers (bar moving across) or before/after that ? wainuitech (129)
