837602 2009-12-08 04:19:00 Is anyone trying Opera Unite? I've set it up using the latest Opera 10.10, and it works, but for anyone to get a "direct connection" to my Opera Unite server, from outside, is difficult. Without this direct connection, the data has to go via Norway. rumpty (2863)
837603 2009-12-08 05:45:00 Have you worked through the user guide (unite.opera.com) -- if you have a router - it looks like you also have to port forward your router to port 8840 or / and enable UPnP to your PC.

837604 2009-12-08 07:35:00 Thanks for the reply wainuitech.

I reckon I've tried almost everything. UPnp is enabled in the router. Then forwarded port 8840, checking that it was open with PFCheck - still no direct connection. (Later forwarded 80 as well) Checked the UPnP related services were running in XP. Put the computer in the DMZ, no change. And to top it off, tried all the above in Linux, still no better.

But, I then closed my broadband connection, resurrected my dial-up account with Freenet, tried that, and direct connection to Opera Unite worked! No mucking about, it just worked. Had a local friend confirm that from his place earlier.

So what do you make of that? How can I get it to work on ADSL?

837605 2009-12-08 07:47:00 This wont be much help --- I did install and try it on a linux PC, and if its any consolation that didn't work either, when I tried to log in from another PC - it said it had, but the page was blank.

I'm on telstra cable.

No time tonight, but I may throw it on a windows PC tomorrow - of course someone else may have the answer by then.

837606 2009-12-08 07:49:00 Ok, thanks again. rumpty (2863)
837607 2009-12-09 06:38:00 I tried it out and couldnt get it to go either - Kept getting the unite server starting up - then it came up with the little yellow warning triangle and said Opera Unite Error.

I tried using a port number that I have forwarded on my router that I usually use for torrents (the torrent client is not running). It just doesnt want to go. I'm on Vodafone/IHUG if that makes any difference.

Is the propeller symbol down in the bottom right of Opera a happy green colour - are you sure its not reporting an error?

I also note that if I try and ping unite.opera.com I get an IP address returned (91.203.99.54 - but "Destination host unreachable.") so maybe that is the issue - Not sure what I can do about that.

837608 2009-12-09 08:04:00 The Opera Unite "server in your web browser" is working for me, there is no basic problem there, but my point in this thread was the difficulty of getting a direct connection to allow peer to peer file transfers, instead of having to go via the proxy server in Norway.

The propeller symbol is green.

Thanks for your interest anyway, robjg63.
