837584 2009-12-08 02:00:00 Apparently, CompactFlash cards are identical electrically to IDE drives, which is why they can be connected to IDE ports via a simple adaptor

Why then, can you also buy things like Ethernet cards which run on compactflash interface?

I expect plugging these into your IDE port would not result in a working ethernet card.

What am I missing?

837586 2009-12-08 17:15:00 Back in the days they were used for Cellphones, to provide them with additional connectivity. Same for certain SD Cards that you could buy which provided you with WiFi. Chilling_Silence (9)
837587 2009-12-08 22:12:00 So does it work similarly to USB then? You can just put whatever you like provided the device has the correct firmware to tell the host what it is? Agent_24 (57)
837588 2009-12-08 23:49:00 AFAIK kind of, yes... Chilling_Silence (9)
837589 2009-12-08 23:55:00 You can also replace Ipod hdd's with one (well on some, that have the connection for it, dunno about the later Ipods). Saved wear and tear I suppose. But you'll have less space Speedy Gonzales (78)
