726318 2008-12-07 00:36:00 While this article (www.tweakheadz.com) is old, I say that because it deals with powermac and not mac pro and also PPC and not intel, it does sound fairly unbiased. And in the end if you want both then there is only one choice plod (107)
726319 2008-12-07 21:32:00 PC ftw :)

Much, much cheaper and you can choose exactly what you want in it

Somewhat coincidentally I just built a PC and installed Mac OS on it :p

726320 2008-12-07 21:42:00 WMG says:

You have 3 options. Garage Band which is included with a Mac and is perfectly suitable for production. Logic Express which is the cheapest pro option. Logic Pro which is the full option.

You can also use Cubase which is for Mac or PC or Logic Pro. (same)

Most files come with generic swappable codecs.

He also says the latest Killers album (which ironicly we were taking the mickey out of over the weekend in the chat forum) :) was done entirely on Logic Pro .

He has spoken.

726321 2008-12-07 22:42:00 Also the soundcard definitely matters when it comes to sound reproduction. Some cheaper sound cards introduce latency during music processing, so if you are using external instruments etc, it will ruin your timing. My brother was using electronic drums and had all sorts of ASIO latency issues.

I'm not sure how sound is implemented in macs (onboard, dedicated etc), but macs and linux do not have latency issues because the driver stack is different.

726322 2008-12-07 23:48:00 You could do what Nermal did, and just install OS X on a PC (a bit hackish, but it's possible), or maybe run it in a Virtual Machine. That way, it only costs you a copy of OS X (and not a whole new rig). Only problem I can see is getting OS X to see soundcards, but if your chosen software does most processing on the CPU, well, problem solved. ubergeek85 (131)
726323 2008-12-07 23:51:00 Here's a thought.

Pick your software-Already done.

Pick your hardware.

Ignore the OS issue, Its pointless.

726324 2008-12-08 00:07:00 Asio can be a nightmare, latency is bloody tricky at the best of times. Took me awhile to figure that stuff out. rob_on_guitar (4196)
726325 2008-12-08 02:57:00 Metla has a point, have you already invested in software? As a down side going purely windows it will limit future software choices. plod (107)
726326 2008-12-08 06:09:00 Im not intrested in the software for now, but no, I havent purchased any yet, I just want to the works in one big go. rob_on_guitar (4196)
